2) Reading others' comments I learned about the trap door and the falling, though where it winds up seems a bit weird... being in an underwater base and you plummet downward yet somehow wind up in what looks like close to the surface. Not a big deal, but this just seemed especially wrong... I think...

Yes, given that you have tried/altered so many 'things' and the crashes have occurred over such a long period of time, the only way is to go back to basics - reinstall the game, start off with the original renderers and change to newer ones once you are sure you are no longer getting crashes. The more I think about it, the funnier it is - the whole 'package' is absurd (in a good way) from the map itself to the muddled zip and readme - it' a work of art into which a lot of thought has gone.

Perhaps the map author interpreted 'ridiculous' too literally (thinking it applied to the maps rather than to the contest) - the map is, after all, "arousing or deserving ridicule : extremely silly or unreasonable : absurd, preposterous" :P

1) I saw sometimes anybody has edited and original map, sometimes cannot be sure if x map was edited and was done with (or not) author permission, unless you see in preview map who made the edition.
