My nali is coming along. I don't know how anyone could make a decent skin with skin maker tools. I am using photoshop and importing into skin maker to see how it looks and back and forth.
Is there a way to make the skin maker texture edit area any bigger? It is too small to be useful in editing. I couldn't get it any bigger. Maybe skin maker is more for previewing and compiling the packages?
It is also helpful in figuring out the grid and where the pieces lay on the model.

Not having used skin maker I'd be guessing, but I think you're right that it's designed primarily for mapping the skin over the model. You should do fine detail painting of any skin with a different program.

This actually sounds pretty interesting to me, a skinning contest. There've been mapping contests, but there's never been a skinning contest.
I may or may not create a skin or two for this contest. Whether I do depends pretty much on what ideas I have in mind for a skin.

Not entirely true.
Before they disappeared forever, the site UTskins.com used to do monthly skinning contests... but that was between 2001 & 2003.

Pretty blurry but oh well.

Some of these faces are weird as hell but pretty good skin. Can't test it atm but nice to see a female skin here

Select the texture you want in UEd, and then click export.

As UnrealGGecko says, export each texture as a .pcx and then convert it - if doing more than one, you'll need to export pcxs individually (at least, that's what I have to do).
