My UT Experience.

Post by Swank »

So before I joined this forum, I played UT99 almost exclusively without mods or downloadable mutators. That being said, I've only been playing UT99 for about a total of 1 year and a half, however I've only been playing it everyday for the past two months as of recently. I technically grew up with this game and played it on and off because I've moved houses alot and getting a good machine to play it on has been an issue for me. But I've only truly started to enjoy it recently because of this forum, it's community and the help that the community has given me. Whenever I got home from work or had any spare time on my hands I would always without question dedicate it to UT99. But with this game there's an extremely bittesweet feeling for me because I've started playing this game later than I should have and most of the websites to get cool things for UT99 from don't exist anymore.. I only really use ut-files if I feel like looking for something. I say bittersweet because I feel like I'm not getting the most out of this amazing game, like I'm not playing it to it's fullest potential.. I have a small collection of mods and mutators but I feel like it's not enough. Most of my mutators and/or mods/monsters don't even work like I want them to and I don't know how to go about that. What I'd actually love is if someone gave me their UT folder. As demanding as that sounds I mean as in the system/textures/maps/music folders to add on to mine because I don't really know where to start on getting my own files. If I start to build up my own collection I'll always come back to this forum and read up on some old threads and think to myself "am I doing this right?", "wow, what they have is much better" and other things like that. I don't know, maybe I'm just insecure. But you all seem like an amazing bunch of people. I say amazing because where I'm from, I don't know a single person who likes this game as much as I do, let alone even knows what it is, and yet there's a bunch of you here who are actively posting on a forum dedicated to a game that was made over a decade ago. I'm sorry for the huge wall of text, I just feel like I want to get my feelings out to the unknown people and if you're still reading this, you're awesome.

I know what you mean. When I found out there can be more than just connecting to a server and play, went to other server, explored files, explored learning server management and even more, mapping, coding, etc. and it got easier and can work with anything to play with, really. My UT folder is like... 30+GB?

Start off by reading through topics in Mutators and Modifications on this forum - you'll get an idea of what is available and what you might like to use. When playing, think what you would like to alter/what more do you want from the game and then see if there is a mod/mutator that does that. Once you have gone through those topics, move on to other parts of the forum (Downloads, for example, where you will come across more interesting things).

Check out http://www.moddb.com/mods/?filter=t&kw= ... modsbrowse which has a large collection of mods.

If you're interested in new maps, first check out http://www.mapraider.com/maps/unreal-tournament where you can filter the maps you view by gametype - there are screenshots, a written description and a quality rating for each map.

There are several depositories of files, in addition to ut-files, including (but not limited to) http://ut.noccer.de/, http://unrealtournament.99.free.fr/utfiles/, https://ut.rushbase.net/beyondunreal, https://ut.rushbase.net/gtombstones/ut99/map_collection, http://utdatabase.gamezoo.org/ and http://ut99maps.gamezoo.org/. Some focus on maps, others are collections of 'everything'.

I think it is more fun and more rewarding to build up your own collection of stuff over time, rather than get somebody else's ready made, as it were. One drawback of the latter is that, unless there is a readme file for every mod and mutator, you won't know what a lot of the stuff is/does, without looking at the code. Another is that alluded to by Chamberly - most people who have been active in UT for a number of years are going to have huge collections of stuff (I looked at my UT folder and it is over 50GB, on a Mac).

Yeah, I'll give that a go. I can only envy you guys who have spent years building up your collection. Ultimately I just want a huge folder of fun things to toy with at my disposal. :lol2:

How dare they?! NONSENSE.

Anyway, I asked this in another thread but I figured I'll ask you too. Do you have any super strong monsters that you could attach here? By super strong I mean independant aggressive monsters that are near immortal and have considerable damage. When I'm playing with my bots I like to keep a super strong monster handy in the map sort of like a raid boss, except it doesn't die and the main goal is to avoid it all costs.

I collected all my tips and info for using UT99 in the modern age into a 3 part guide.
http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/unre ... -f104.html
You do not need everything, and should mix and match to your requirements.

Some items are essential patches and fixes for the official bonus packs, and some is just funky extras that can run in any game mode.
Some of it will enhance the GUI or add new options.

Mmm not really as I made but do know a couple of MH maps that have an insanely high amount of health on a monster or doesn't die at all. I think one of the recent one I played took me and couple of other like 3+ hours to complete the map, awhile 2 hrs or so was just trying to kill 1 HUGHO monsta. :loool:

Whatever map name it was, maybe Sir_Mandrake would remember. I'll point him to this thread.

I know there are a few maps on my server with Monsters of insane health, requiring several fellow hunters to kill it in a tolerable time frame. I cant remember the names of these right off hand but I do know of one that's probably right up your alley.

MH-!!![DIE].unr

People love this one for some reason but it requires at least 5-6 hunters to Clear in reasonable time.

I can't find that one on ut-files. Can you link me to the download?

Some maps even have things like Flying Legless Titans (Archdemons) to Jets with a Devastating Power (Fighters or Bombers), and they have over 100000 health, at least you have some cool and powerful weaponry to use agaisnt them.

And if you are thinking where to download it, well, it's actually unavailable but here is it.

Interesting... Now you have a signature with a server. No more against Net Codes for servers, huh ? Or you have been posting only to annoy other admins ? Or you don't know what replication is used for. Topic being "My UT Experience" you might not be the match.
Looks like you can be happy since 0 admins have noticed your "gaming" + that screenshot which you dared to post a few time ago.
