UT99 and TeamSpeak CPU usage

Post by UTPe »

Hi,
I've been playing UT99 on my laptop by many years. It's an old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M3438G (Intel Pentium M 780 2.26Ghz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6800 256MB, Win7 Pro). Yeah, it's a 10-year-old laptop but it always worked fine with UT99, rendering has been almost perfect even with very large (sniper) maps or complex mods.
But I've a problem during gameplay, I can't use TeamSpeak anymore: CPU usage is too high, it reaches 100% and ut99 becomes unplayable. Actually, I can play UT99 or I can use TeamSpeak with friends but I can't do both at the same time. I removed audio filters/enhancements, plugins and any unnecessary options from TeamSpeak (animated GIFs, moving banners, etc) but substantially nothing changed, CPU usage is still very high.
Do you know other VoIP softwares with less CPU usage suitable for old machines ? :what:

thanks,
Pietro

Probably one of the update caused it to go nuts if you have played it fine before.

Other alternative you could try is Discord, if you haven't. I like it, not much of a difference on me.

Not my solution, but maybe....?
Deactivating the animated gif support.
Settings --> Options --> Design --> "animated gif support" section --> Uncheck both, animated avatars and animated images.

Disable all plugins in settings > plugins

Complete other suggestion: have you checked if the cooling system is free and not blocked by dust, hairs and other things? Maybe the CPU gets too hot and reduces its speed what may results in a higher load. I'd check CPU temperature if such a software tool is available for your system.

Try the Open source Mumble

For identification/authentication it uses email certificates, not usernames and passwords.
Unless someone has your certificate, they cannot steal your ID.
You can get a free email cert from StartCom, or use one you already have.

I checked it first before managing any audio params: laptop cooling system is free and fully working.

Wasn't the TeamSpeak server crashed/hacked the last days?
Or something was exploitable.

Discord is huge and aimed at modern hardware, so I would not imagine it would be better for an old PC.

Is your laptop a multicore or single ?
One option would be to disallow teamspeak from using the same core as UT.

It's a single core CPU, this laptop was released in 2005/2006...
