Short UT99 survey to help my game dev project

Post by Snipper »

Hi ut99 community, let me introduce myself:
I'm a 17 year old novice game developer studying computer science A level. I'm going to be attempting to make a simple UT99-inspired arena shooter for my programming coursework. I need to conduct research for the project so I was pointed to here as a place to start :D . Anyway, I have created a short UT99 survey that will help me focus my development. If you take the time to fill this out you will be helping me out immensely and are truly an awesome human. Thanks! :tu:

Hello there Snipper.
This lot in here are definitely opinionated, so I hope you get plenty of useful feedback.
This site has plenty of mapping resources and dev tutorials.

There are also various updates for the raw UT99 which will add newer features and capabilities. These may be useful for you.
To be blunt, one of the most useful tools you should get is original Unreal, then update it with the v227 patch from www.oldunreal.com. That will give you more modern features in UEd2.1, including more import/export options.
You can prepare many resources in UEd2.1 for UEd2
With the 227 patch Unreal also has full static mesh support which UT99 does not.
A UT99 deco/mesh has cylinder collision, and U227 can use full mesh collision.

Thank you! I will definitely look into these. I haven't actually played the original Unreal so I will certainly be doing so. Hopefully if I can find a way to delve into some of the original maps I can find out some more about how they work :)

Also I'd like to give a broader thanks to anyone who participated in my survey. I've already gotten 9 responses, many of which going into a lot of detail on some of the more open ended questions. Cheers guys!
