Farewell Unreal Survivors

Hi all

I'm never sure where to put these topics so moderators please move this if needed.

Only a small post.

A few years ago I created unrealsurvivors.com as a refugee spot for players from truff.net and multiplay.co.uk (and others!).

We started well but now our servers sit empty and our forum is very quiet.

To that end I won't be renewing our domain name or our servers this year.

For anyone interested: https://www.unrealsurvivors.com/viewtop ... f=16&t=237

I'll be on here when I can but probably not playing much.

Thank you to everyone who supported us.

A big thank you for ut99.org for this awesome site :tu:

Solution: Free domain host, and run your server locally. (laptop, raspberry, or most easy one: a little mini desktop/windows htpc)
Mini pc's are the best choice due to their low energy costs.
Maybe a one time investment of 100-200 euro.
Needs some more upgrades in the future, but you get the idea, cheaper then online game hosts.

Old company used "thin-clients" can even run a UT server or 3 on it.
You can buy them el-cheapo for 30-50 euro.

With a remote desktop application like VNC/Radmin (not teamviewer, more ram usage)
You can control this server from anywhere, where you place it :)

You also have more (read total) control over your server installation instead of hosts like GameServers and NFO.

New forums these days won't work anymore.
There are too many group platforms which are logically taking over. (discord/telegram you name it)
Established forums will die not too far from now as well, sad but true.

UT ON Man Piley! 8)
Almost 20th anniversary, and you're bailing ;) ?
Our servers are always empty as well!
Who's isn't ?
Joking, i feel you.
But there are solutions for your situation, if you want to sustain the servers you know.

This. Not this forum though! We keep it OG in here.

It's the one thing I dislike about discord taking over. discord is just, in terms of ' survival of the fittest ', the best out there for gaming communities altogether as the complete cross platform and easy-to-use best.

( rip IRC too thanks to discord! )

RIP forums

You did good P, there's nothing to regret.

As a community we've held on for much longer than anyone would have predicted, almost solely because of people like you carrying the torch. You did your part so now enjoy your free time as you wish. You've earned it.
