New UT99 maps

Post by Sergeant Todd »

Two new deathmatch maps worth playing have been posted at Levels4you.com. DM-PS2 Brickyard by DrunKenobi and DM-Arenes by an unknown author. Here's the link: :)

Naaah, Brickyard is already a freaking long time on beyondunreal available for download as like some other PS2 DM ports. I played them all. The only useful map was there Core, all the rest, really endless corridors and nearly no polys. Admittedly it was intended for PS2 splitscreen. So it was necessary to reduce VPC.

Both statements are FALSE! I would rather say, nearly NO NEW map for ut99 is good (or decent). 2 Days maps are made on conveyor belts. Or those 300kb Maps on unrealplayground, what the hell is going on here, grabbed there only a handful of some good ones ..

No, no, no. We aren't going to have this talk again:
http://www.ut99.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... 204#p13204

Like I said, and made myself clear:
- Visuals
- Style
- Experience
- Gameplay
- Player

The 5 elements that define a proper map in each gametype.

CTF is different from ICTF, AS is different from DM, DM is different from SP, SP is different from RX, even RX is different from SLV.

If I make a map with good visuals for RX and nearlly no RX gameplay, the map sucks.
If I make a map with nearlly no detail for SP and only gameplay, the map somehow sucks as well.

And there's the player's point of view that is very different from the mapper's point of view, and "only players" represent more than 80% for sure of all the UT gaming community.
But if the mapper wants to get better on visuals and stability, he must listen to mappers, but if he wants gameplay, he must listen to players. If he wants both, he should get both opinions and try to mix both (which is very hard job, whoever the mapper is, since the opinions are usually different).

See the difference? I won't make this talk again. :|

Edit..
The post above has changed before i post this reply, and i agree with many of the things said above.
now my original reply.

Without getting in too deep here...

depends what kind of maps people are looking for...
you can have a real rough put together map, which other map makers critisize no end, but has great game play for the style intended..
or you could have a master piece which is terrible to play..
the trick is combining both aspects for the game style intended.. and only the players who keep playing the maps will know what they like.

We have a guy who has a site who is a subdomain at our place, "BullDozer" he creates some very nice maps, you wont find poor quality from him, he makes maps all the time... so many of his UT99 maps look as tho they were 2k4 they are very good quality also good game play.
he is always making maps for ut99 2k4 and now has also started doing UT3 maps.
maybe you should check some out?

Well said Ferali
Almost ANY NEW Map for UT99 is a Good one!
 Many of the maps that have been released lately turned out to be CRAP! Those mappers don't even bother to create good gameplay... not to mention visuals. Worst case is when those mappers think that they are Pro... I had an argument about it with a Chaos Snake guy who rated his own map and reacted negatively on a provided feedback. So what the hell are you talking about?
Or those 300kb Maps
Well, 300k contests seem to be quite good IMHO. Yeah, they are weird, yes, some of those maps look ugly but this is just the same challenge as making a FoT map. Mmm, makes me think that I should make one 300k map for current contest as well.

@Alex: I said, some of the 300 kb maps are nice.. well for 300 kb maps^^
but some are pretty ugly. If I downloaded some of them I played them once and then never again.

@Bulldozer Maps: Well, from what I have seen from the pics it is between average and ok, it does not go to much into the detail.

Whoa. When I said these maps are worth playing, I made a SUBJECTIVE judgement. I wasn't saying they're great maps. Not being a mapper, I'm not qualified to say that. They were fun to play for me - that's all, folks..

Oh, I tried to download DM-Death Valley Utah at Hook's site, but the link wasn't working....

screen shots can be very deceiving, the actual maps are much better than the pic's do justice.

I checked one of them - one of the most promising screenshots - approved my guess...
