Well after trying both on the new dual -core rig, I'd have to say that openGL is the way to go! It looks great and plays great on the 9600 GT OC.

Many thanks for the UT99 openGL guide on here!! it worked wonders !! :tu:

I'd say Direct3d if you're using a newer operating system.

tried that first, it was herky-jerky and looked like the same old-same old.
Today I got the newer and much better looking UTRP textures loaded up and
OMG!!! :tu: :gj: the textures look great !! It looks like a totally different game now and
the gameplay is smooth and plays great on and offline.
Thanks for all the hardwork on the retexturing !

When people say "Direct3D" it would be nice to mention what they exactly mean by that - standard Direct3D that comes with UT or newer Direct3D8 and Direct3D9 renderers. Otherwise it may be little confusing.

I'm too lazy to check, but I think I use that Direct3D thing.

Read this:

Direct3D9 > OpenGL > Direct3D8 > anything else...

i switched to d3d9 only yesterday. for some strange reason my mouse feels less 'spongy' now than it did with opengl.

I play it in Direct3D9, although is makes textures almost too grainy - my mouse precision for some strange reason became very responsive

cya.
OpenGL looks better, but Direct3D is faster.

A: OpenGl for sure.

Could you please elaborate how does OpenGL provide better visuals than Direct3D9? The image quality you get also highly depens how you've configured your UT visual settings.
I've tested both renderers and played with different settings/configurations and I have to admit they look par. If you have some additional details to share why should we prefer one renderer over another I'm open to listen you :agree1:

I have found the OpenGL render way better than the D3D....though I do use the OpenGL drivers from the 7 Bullets mod:

http://phalanx.planetunreal.gamespy.com/

For those who don't know the drivers and note pad text (you have to modify the .Ini file) are in a separate folder in the 7 Bullets download. You don't need to install the mod to get the drivers to work. I have been using these drivers with a variety of video cards. :tu:
