Your input in ut99
My very first 1st person shooter was Wolfenstein 3·D. The original one with what would be viewed today as truly crappy digitized graphics. At the time it was cutting edge.
It was the early 1990's. Go figure.
The point is, the controls the game had as defaults have pretty much shaped my control setting for every 1st person shooter since. I reconfigure them to that same basic setup, with a slight variation given that Wolfenstein originally didn't have a concept of up & down.
When playing Unreal Tournament, I barely use the mouse unless I'm sniping, all of my controls are in the keyboard:
Ctrl = fire
Spacebar = alt fire
Alt = Walk
A = Jump
Z = Crouch
Page Up = Look up
Page Down = Look down
Home = Center view
Q = Throw weapon
W = Throw relic
I use the same controls in every Unreal game. Had to litterlly cut & paste them into Unreal 2 as some of those moves didn't exist in the game initially.
Question:
Do you use the controls for ut99 that the game has set for defaults or do you customize them a certain way that's easier for you?

Re: Your input in ut99
In my opinion, aiming with a mouse is much easier than with the keyboard.
The control with WASD was new to me and uncomfortable at the beginning (Unreal was my first FPS) but after a two hours or so I couldn't think of a better solution
In Unreal I only changed the "switch to next inventory item" from 9 to ->.

Re: Your input in ut99
lol taxy, your controls are a little bit weird xD
here are mine:
WASD - standard bro!
C - crouch
Shift - walking
T - Say
- - TeamSay
Q, E, F, B - bunnytrack team commands
f4 - semiadmin login
f6 - admin login
O - ghost
P - walk
L - showall
R - open MapVote
Numblock 1 - switch to blue team
Numblock 2 - switch to red team
Numblock 3 - behindview1
Numblock 5 - behindview0
Numblock 9 - suicide
Numblock Minus - disconnect
Numblock Star - reconnect
Numblock / - quit
oh yeah and not to forget, as for all bunnytrack noobs: Mousewheel - Jump | Up......
These are the controls that I can play with the best, even altho I see problems with R being next to E, so I might open mapvote during a match by accident.
A similar issue is Numblock 9 surrounded by reconnect, disconnect and quit even xD. Well it taught me pressing important buttons which means performing important actions very thoroughly xD

Re: Your input in ut99
A few things:
1) Gonna kick myself if this is obvious and I'm just not getting it now: what's WASD?
2) Hey, VRN|C-18; can you look in and get me the exact keybinding info for that team switch? I'd like to incorporate that. They're usually a single word, or a bunch of words shoved into 1, and I don't think it's literally "switch to blue team". Thanks in advance!
3) editor Dave: For precise aiming, you're 100% right. Keyboard ain't great for aiming, that's why I snipe with the mouse. However, splash effects and concussive waves generated by weapons make up for that. Also, unlike a lot of folks that like to fight at a distance, I love fighting up close and personal.

WASD is the standard movement control in most FPS, and so in UT
In Unreal, the preset movement is on the arrow keys, I believe...

Re: Your input in ut99
Honestly Evilgrins, I have no idea.
I use Say !red or Say !blue for servers with ASC or NexGen Server Controller.
For other servers I just play in whatever team I am forced into or switch by going to the Menu-PlayerSetup.
Also to explain WASD in detail: the key for the letters W A S and D on your keyboard, W = move forward, S = move backwards, D = strafe right, A = strafe left
The last FPS I played with the arrow keys was Lucas Arts Outlaws hahahaha

Re: Your input in ut99
Hahaha ...no WASD means "What A Silly Discussion"
just kidding ...like the previous writer stated those are the movement keys.
My setting is:
Arrows______________for forward, backwards, strafe right, strafe left
insert/0_____________for jump
crtl_________________for crouch
shift _______________for throw weapon
enter_______________for throw relic
del above the Arrows__for the speech menu
the num-pad numbers_for weapons arranged after preference.
mouse wheel up and down change weapons.
And mouse wheel click switch to the translocator.
I don't like it to have other buttons near around the movement keys ...so are the arrows my only way to play a FPS game.

Re: Your input in ut99
WASD for movements
mouse for aiming
Z = crouch
Space = Jump
I need the weapons close:
2 = rocket launcher
3 = sniper
QER = Ripper, Pulse, Bio
F = Minigun
Shift / Caps Lock = Flak
Tab ThrowWeapon
Y = Say (moved it out of the way because I hit it too much by accident)
H = TeamSay
X/C = Some CTF speachbinds I always forget about.
N=Throw Relic
M=Suicide
UT sets movement to the arrowkeys by default.

Re: Your input in ut99
I'd started using WASD only after using the mouse in FPS. Before 2001, when I get Unreal: RTNP, I used keyboard only, in the games built on id and Monolith engines - DOOM 2, Blood, Duke 3D. In these I had movement on cursor keys, and Space to open/activate, Ctrl to fire, Alt to jump (or in Blood - A=jump, Z=crouch).
Now I using left part of the keyboard since holdimg mouse in theright hand. For my custom weapons in UT I also using keys E,R,T,Y,F,G,H,V.
Q or Enter is Inventory activation, [/], B/N - select.

Re: Your input in ut99
My combination is:
Up = Forward
Down=Back
Left=Left
Right=Right
Ctrl=Jump
Space=Crouch
Mousewheel Up Down=Weapon Change
Bracket Left Right = Turn Left Turn Right
Q=Lean Left
E=Lean Right
NumPad0=Reload
Enter=Use
And I use this layout in all FPS games if possible.
I don't like wasd key combination layoutz (... pressing wrong buttons that way .. ehm. a lot ).

Re: Your input in ut99
I had been using the arrow keys for movement for years until I finally realized it was MUCH easier to reach the Space bar if I used WASD.
My layout is mostly based on the defaults, but I think I have almost every single key bound to some specific function I use for testing (or cheating), like P for toggling playersonly, for example.
