Different aliens, different projectiles.

The red aliens do something like you say, but they don't set them on fire so much as kill in a gust of flame. That big alien above isn't so much firing just flame, it's an enhanced rocket launcher projectile with a fiery corona around it.

I don't know that weapons mod you mentioned.
