Essentials for online play...

Post by UnrealGGecko »

I'm finally getting internet on my pc next week and this question came:
What mods/mutators or other stuff will I need:
1) to save what I was downloading during the conection?
2) for less downloading?
So basicly what files would be recomended when I finally jump into UT online?
Also (a bit off-topic): what is cache? Is this the stuff I downloaded?

Well, I think you should keep your install clean.
Reason is that even if you install some files to avoid downloading them, you will end up downloading them again as modding and mapping is still going strong nowadays online-wise, thus let's say you install ACE for example, odds are that you will have to download it again and again each time Anthrax releases a new one.
The same is true for all the mods in the servers: SLV, RX, Siege, BT, etc, etc

So, if you don't want to play with any of these mods in practice sessions (offline), then don't bother to find them, just let the game download it from the server and cache them (once cached, you don't have to download them again for another 30 days).
There's also the problem with mismatches. Unfortunately there are tons of file mismatches among the servers (basically slightly different files with the same filename), so if you install one of these in your local install, you will get mismatches in some servers and won't be able to play.
However, if you don't install these, if the one you have in cache doesn't match, the game downloads the new one, no problem.

As for less downloading, there isn't anything you can do, this is entirely up to the server admin to uzip the files and make the players download those instead of the uncompressed raw files.

1. There's a utility called CacheCleaner out there somewhere. It converts cache files into their proper file type and sorts them for you into the proper folder. (Either CacheCleaner or MapManager was the name of the program)
2. Cache is downloaded "stuff", yes. I'd recommend opening up your UT.ini and editing "purgecachedays=" to 0. This way, downloaded files are never deleted. (Unless storage space is an issue)

You can set PurgeCacheDays=0 to keep cache from cleaning itself after certain amount of time.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I didn't want to make a new topic, so I'll just post this here...
Anyway, I finally got internet (but it barely opens google after 3 min.). But I can play UT and CS2D without problems... Except 1... DOWNLOADS.
I can't even start downloading from more than 80% of the servers. The rest downloads quite slowly (took 10 min to download a 200k file). Now the strange thing: 1 server gave me lightning speed downloads (took about 3 min to download a 13000k MH map!). So the question would be, what gives?
The server that I was talking about is called NEMETHALOZAT (I think) and the admin being NHZ-Tezla, btw.

You are in one part of the world, and the servers are probably half way round the planet via many hops.
The internet varies everytime you use it, depending on which route the data goes.

Some servers use a redirect site for the files, and some don't.

I made a list of useful tools for diagnosing and tweaking your network and internet connections.
http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/netw ... t1549.html
(Think I should add that page to my own site!)

If you use a "traceroute" program, you can see where in the world the delay is.
Changing your DNS lookup service will also speed up your normal web access.

If you use Opera browser, then get the GeoData IP plugin
http://code.highspec.ru/gd4ip_about.htm

As for a UT "essentials" list. I am trying to compile such a list. I should put more online related updates/addons soon, but it is worth checking to see if you are missing anything.
http://my.opera.com/Unreal-Tournament/b ... tournament.
As ever, any suggestions for me to add, are most welcome.

Hook runs up-to-date servers, so his list of addons is worth browsing (you will need the map-vote at some point).

Is this all the Bonus Packs, or the fixes for the BPs, or the BPs with the fixes included?
