UT-FILES down. Population panics. Suicide rate increases.

Post by Dr.Flay »

I keep meaning to ask, can someone look into why I can't post a new thread in the "Announcements" section (after they move this to that section).
STOP PRESS NEWS (Day old)

Those of a nervous disposition should not look at the link below
http://www.ut-files.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Those who wish to help fill the gap should follow the lead of Mapraider and ...um well me, by sharing what you have in a pool, should read these;
http://wayback.archive.org/web/20120829 ... 90-10.html (last time this happened)
http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/ut-f ... 63-30.html (last time this happened)
http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=12& ... cdn#p44183 (Related issue)
 http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4765 (personal solution)
 http://www.unrealkillers.com/f14/coralc ... lcdn-2771/ (wider solution)

I've stood on my soap-box (prepare for more) and ranted on several sites over the past couple of years.
"WE" the community are our only hope.

:wth: This is not a Sci-Fi film.
There is no hero or "Man-kinds last best chance for survival".

It is you, the gamers, the mappers and most of all the "Collectors".
Sorry, but you are it.
The fans and fanatics like you and me.

"Here comes boring the science bit" most of you can/will skip this.

Spamming uploads to any site you can find is a great help, but you can also give links to files you have on your PC.
Torrents are most peoples idea of fileshare programs, but they are far to limited for long-term use, and have severe drawbacks, such as often relying on a tracker/site still running.
:pfff: In my opinion torrents are killing p2p fileshare.
There are more advanced options such as "Shareaza 2", that combine torrents and all your downloads into a library of shared and browsable files.

I'll use an existing file as an example, Kelly's collection "ALLUTSkins.7z" (1.24GB)

Code: Select all

magnet:?xt=urn:bitprint:VITKY4P6UPMAORSLDJZ424UADWCTRV4L.UMWBLNHAO2K6ZQBAN7A537CNMOAVAE7RN2HMLGQ&xt=urn:ed2khash:ede1a67fe0cd62bf747d0390df53467c&xl=1340783774&dn=ALLUTSkins.7z
Torrent, in practice: (and how the odds get smaller and smaller)
Kelly had to organise then compress his models/skins archive, then create a torrent (with a reliable tracker) of it, so it could be uploaded to "some" sites, where "some" people will find it.
"Some" people will download it, and "some" people will seed it... for a while. Then (now) it becomes unavailable.

All other decentralised p2p, in practice: (and how to be safer)
Kelly could have organised the collection (I know, it was already, but roll with it), and added the folder to the shared library.
...umm that's it really :noidea
It is now available to all. It really is that simple. You don't even need an account with anything.
It is still just as important to publicly spam links to stuff you have, but from day-1 you will be one of many with the same files (unlike torrents), but you can just give yourself as a start location.
eg. me  (unless the router reconnects)

Code: Select all

shareaza:browse:109.157.71.232:6346
The "Magnet link" I gave above, will work no matter what site (or seeders) may be available.
All it needs, is anyone to connect that has that file in a shared folder.

 Many of the individual files inside the 7zip file, many of us will already have, and are therefore duplicated in the torrent.
 With real oldskool p2p (where users become hubs), People can search UserK for other treasure they may want, and ignore the stuff they already have.
 If they have shared their own collection, Shareaza (or equivalent) will show the files they already have, so avoiding unnecessary bandwidth wastage.
Both parties win :tu:
You can keep searching the networks for a file you want (or are downloading), and add the extra sources as they become available.
Files you love (or hate) you can tag with a review and star-rating.
You can mark deleted files as fake/corrupt, wrong name, or what-ever, so others avoid mistakes.

...and still all this without using an advert infested website (and you still don't need an account with anything).

On a security level, after you consider that you are actually far easier to find, and torrent sites make money from the adverts, can someone else please defend the concept of torrents if they can ?

Tired, bored, drunk and tired.
I hope this makes sense. I will read/edit later, sorry

Great read ...although sad event.
I will be no help in this issue. I can't host some files because my HDD space is under 1GB (again).
And what I have are only mods who are common known ... UT-Rockets, Bounce, Chaos UT, NW3...

I'll give a shot at sharing (got about 7GB left so...), mostly stuff I found from .uz sites (zipped without any missing packages).
I'll just follow that Shareaza tut over there... :D

Sad to see ut-files offline... first map-factory.org went down now this! :nonono: :sad2:

Strictly speaking anyone with a file someone else does not have is a help, even if they are only connected while they are doing their own downloads.

You don't require any extra space to host the files you have, only the space to install the p2p software (unless you download more stuff).
You don't have to act as a permanent host.
I just connect when I am downloading, or am not using the net for UT.
It is an organic system.

The only extra space I am using is for the database of info that Shareaza has created.
Currently sharing 224.74 GB which has created a large 204 MB database.
I am sharing much more than my Unreal archives, so most people would have a much smaller database.
As I am sharing my free music collection, there is a lot of metadata in it.

I may have some solutions to get another repository going.

also offering annual Redirection Services if anyone needs it?.. atm I think $10.00 per GB per Year sounds very reasonable..

if I get 10GB's of sales then its up and running within 24 hours.

see sig for more info. ˅

Lol, and I was... ummm, *borrowing* bandwidth from my dropbox folder to redirect my test server files.
Hey, clients do get to connect to it 80% of the times, otherwise they have to hit rejoin until it does.

I would like to offer a place for files at unrealfuzz dot com.
In fact, there are some items there but no links to them, yet.
I'd like to provide a simple way to present & download files similar to what dU or UM has.
My main concern is the possible abuse of site rippers.
Does anyone know of a way in phpbb to restrict the flow of downloads so as to not choke all bandwidth but still be able to download stuff?
I'm not a web wizard so I'd be glad to work with someone who's willing to help.

I can upload to your redirect the contents of uz ut-files. With no replace existing files.
I don't know how it work for restrict.
