Periodically in the main thread that shows my skinning on this forum I get questions put to me, and I answer them if i can. I'm not an authority on skinning, but I know some stuff.
This one I don't.
Since UT came out I've found a few skins that either don't work on bots or they don't work on players. skin looks perfectly fine on one or the other, but not both.
I recently edited this skin for Dragon's clan/server:
On a player it looks exactly as you see it there. Works fine, but if you put it on a bot it shows up as a blank. Just a blurry gray thing.
This somewhat hilarious model has the opposite problem:
On a bot it looks exactly like that, works great. However, if you try to use the skin yourself all you get is this blank blurry gray thing.
I can at least link to the GBM if anyone wants to try to figure this out:

Re: skin works on player but not bots & vice versa
1) Be sure textures are in the correct format (256x256 color scale .pcx image with no more than 256 colors - color scale will think about it);
2) Be sure the .int has correct links to all textures and the proper texture number (e.g. RawS1, RawS2, RawS3, RawS4, RawS5);
3) Be sure UnrealEd imported the textures correctly (if you respected point 1 correctly, there's 2.371% percentage that it won't), but if you can see the skin correctly/the bot wears it correctly, this isn't the problem;
4) If any of these points are totally, or partially missed, begin your skin again from point 1. And re-compile it (most of the trouble are in there).
By the way I tested this model (I have AMS and SkeletalCharFix313 so that might be the fix to the problem), and both I and the bot use it no problem.

I had checked all of what you mentioned, but wanted to comment on this. 256 colors is a definite, you can't load an image with more colors than that in UnrealEd or it doesn't work at all.{S.o.W}DeathMask wrote:1) Be sure textures are in the correct format (256x256 color scale .pcx image with no more than 256 colors - color scale will think about it);
I also have the skeletal dealio, for GBM, so that wasn't the issue... but you can see it fully on both bot and you? Hmmm, did you try it on you with team colors & without?

Re: skin works on player but not bots & vice versa
I had red team and bots all the others...I exclude being something at points 1,2 and 3. I also took a look at the .int file. Everything seemed fine except for one thing: in GBMSkins.int, there is only ONE REFERAL to "GBM", so, in menu, you'd see just one GBM right? Wrong. In menu, I see TWO "GBM" skins. Somehow, the author made one more referal to GBM.int. Perhaps that is the problem, and Engine doesn't really know which one to pick. Most likely it gives priority to the GBM.int and picks from there, showing the model, but not the skin (making the bot look all grey). But if so, it's strange it didn't happen to me.

It happened once to me ...the Genestaler model turned grey after I copied my UT from an external drive.

Genestealer has a gray skin built into it, it was already there you probably just didn't notice it before.papercoffee wrote:It happened once to me ...the Genestaler model turned grey after I copied my UT from an external drive.

I'm assuming this is what you mean.papercoffee wrote:What are you talking about?
Beyond just the team colors, the genestealer model has 2 defaults.
Prototype:
Genestealer:
When you said your genestealer turned gray, I figured you were unaware of the 2 modes of the thing.
