How to Rent a Server

I am just about to rent it.
I have no computer experience at all, so if someone could explain to me exactly what I need to do get the server up and running after I rent the slot that would be great.

there is no "simple" explanation. do some research we don't know what you want to set up.

I can tell you that these are the basic mods you will probably want.

mapvotela13 for map voting
nexgen server controller
(optional) ACE for anticheat maybe utpure as well

The one qwerty told you is like tell us what you would like to set up, we can just send you some download links and some better stuff if you preferred. There are already like couple of thousands of stuff so there is plenty to choose.

Generally, when you use a rented server, sometimes you use the web browser to connect to the admin panel to control your server with start and stop.
Another thing is, using a program like for an example: Filezilla... to upload/edit files on your server. These are the very basic beginning of the server, once you get these, you can move on to adding whatever you like on your server.

Ok, I just want a pure, basic server. No special mods.
I want it to be like a server that you would play over the LAN, but on the internet instead.
It is probably going to be a private server, for now anyways, so I don't think I'll need the anti-cheating mod.

That will be ok. Basic include a mapvote so you can pick and vote map as you needed (most common install is MapVoteLA13, but there is also a lot of cool other mapvote), and anti-cheat is fine, there is plenty of them. Most common installed anti-cheat is ACEv08h for latest update.

Not sure if this has been resolved or note (came into the chat late), but if you're still looking for game server hosting, I've been pretty happy with 1&1 and their dedicated servers. Usually pretty fast and connections are stable, so well worth a look if you're still wanting to find a new company.
