Valhalla Avatar

Post by EvilGrins »

I think I heard about this years ago, like more than 7. The concept I heard was sites using it allowed whatever skin a person joining their game had to be seen even if that skin wasn't on the hosted server or written up in serverpackages...

...or I could be misremembering. Might've been some other Viking related terminology.

What exactly is Valhalla Avatar?

Well, that is almost right.

If you run it on a server, it will allow players to see whatever skin other players are using, IF and only IF they also have
that same skin package installed locally. If they don't, they will see whatever default skin the server has configured.

How is that any different than normal? Sounds exactly like including skins you have on serverpackages.

It is different, because no skins are added to serverpackages. No extra downloads.

Buyer beware because the guy who coded val avatar used something called "player replication info" and extended it to make his mod work. Any running game of UT can only have one player replication info so if another mod tries to create one too you will get bad conflicts.

Let me try a visual. This is the Player Replication Info (PRI) of a normal game:

Core.Object
|
+-- Engine.Actor
|
+-- Engine.Info
|
+-- Engine.ReplicationInfo
|
+-- Engine.PlayerReplicationInfo
|
+--Val Avatar's PRI

Now for say an MH2 game:

Core.Object
|
+-- Engine.Actor
|
+-- Engine.Info
|
+-- Engine.ReplicationInfo
|
+-- Engine.PlayerReplicationInfo
|
+--Val Avatar's PRI
&
+-+--MH2's PRI

Using the second scenario will cause skins to be invisible, green, messed up, and MH2 will be all wonky. It's a good mod but not done the right way. I emailed to see if I could fix it but never got a reply. I actually wanted to include it into MH2
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Interesting info, and explains a few "glitches" that have shown up on the server(s) I have used that on.

In actual use, it is almost useless really, unless the players on your server are all in contact with each other and have
the right skin packages installed.

For random players on a public server, I bet it doesn't even come into play very often....

I think I still have it running on 1 or 2 of my servers. I need to yank it off there.

If it's not causing conflict, it's not a bad mod. Even if the skin pack is in your cache it will display, you don't need to have it installed as a usable skin. Also it has some pretty good chat switches built into it that some people use.
Overall it's a decent mod with many uses but it just has too much conflict coded as it is.

Does this mod work for voice packs also?
We run Valhalla Avatar on CMM and some of us hear some player's custom voice packs and some do not.
Voice packs that are not installed on the server.

Yes. Or so I've heard before from others. In fact, all custom packs should be audible in game (again, I'm told this) :D
