looking for an accurate ripper crosshair

Post by raithe »

I was wondering if anyone knows of a decent ripper crosshair. I've been usinng a bind setup that switches crosses with weqpons (one of the only ut2 features I like) but by default the ripper seems to be a little off center. Any suggestions?
thanks.

Mod Name: WMUTxhair.utx --- Version 1.0
Released on: 5/06/2009.
Description: Modified version of UnrealTournament (UT99) crosshairs
for Left and Right hand weapon users.
Programs: UnrealED2.0, Gimp2.2
CopyRight (C) 2009.
=======================================================

Intallation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Place the WMUTxhair.utx file in the following folder...
UnrealTournamentTextures

What is this?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In UnrealTournament (UT99) the designers of the game screwed up the
position of the crosshair for right and left hand weapon. They coded the
HUD class to move the crosshair texture when switching to any of the 2
weapon hands for who knows what reason, making the player not notice
that the crosshair is no longer centered and not realize why they miss
their shots more than using Center or Hidden hand weapon option. Well,
I have modified UT's default crosshairs and corrected their positions, so
that they are always centered. These centered crosshairs will improve
the accuracy on the players using Left or Right hand weapon and usually
only takes a few minutes to get used to them. Enjoy

Here's the list of the Left handed crosshairs for left handed players:
CrossHairs[9]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair1
CrossHairs[10]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair2
CrossHairs[11]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair3
CrossHairs[12]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair4
CrossHairs[13]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair5
CrossHairs[14]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair6
CrossHairs[15]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair7
CrossHairs[16]=WMUTxhair.L_Dot
CrossHairs[17]=WMUTxhair.L_CHair9
CrossHairs[18]=WMUTxhair.L_Special1
CrossHairs[19]=WMUTxhair.L_Special2

Here's the list of the Right handed crosshairs for right handed players:
CrossHairs[9]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair1
CrossHairs[10]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair2
CrossHairs[11]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair3
CrossHairs[12]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair4
CrossHairs[13]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair5
CrossHairs[14]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair6
CrossHairs[15]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair7
CrossHairs[16]=WMUTxhair.R_Dot
CrossHairs[17]=WMUTxhair.R_CHair9
CrossHairs[18]=WMUTxhair.R_Special1
CrossHairs[19]=WMUTxhair.R_Special2

How can I test to see if they match the Center or Hidden ones?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are the Aliases with the keybind I had to figure out in order to test them
properly which made my work a lot easier. You can toggle between 2 aliases
where one sets the Centered weapon with the default Dot crosshair and the
other one alias switches to the Right hand with my right handed Dot version.
These two alias need to be toggled with a single keybind while in game and
here's an example of what I used:

Aliases[25]=(Command="set Engine.HUD Crosshair 7|sethand Center|set input Q xC",Alias=xR)
Aliases[26]=(Command="set Engine.HUD Crosshair 16|sethand Right|set input Q xR",Alias=xC)
Q=xR

I hope you find them usefull and like the editing.
If you have any requests for other crosshairs just Email me about it and i'll
see what I can do.

Do not take credit for my work. You are only allowed to use this package.
This mod is not to be modified or sold at any cost. If you do, I will sue you :)

The only off-centre cross-hair I have a problem with is the Chaos sniper rifle.
I love the bouncing bullets, but shooting yourself in the face while sniping near a wall is such a pain in the forehead !

Ok, only now I noticed this thread and this in the package ReadMe, so I will throw here some facts about this:

Epic HAD a real reason to do that, and the reason is simple and obvious if the guy actually thought and researched a bit further about it instead of throwing a "Epic is dumb" kinda of argument: fact is that on left and right hands every weapon has a *firing offset*.
What does this mean exactly? This mean that no matter what you do, the shots and projectiles will be spawned near the actual weapon position (on your left or right) and directed along your exact view rotation, which means that by centering the crosshair for left and right view you will miss even more shots in most weapons.
Here's a picture:
offsets.PNG
offsets.PNG (6.25 KiB) Viewed 4196 times
Therefore to counter this lack of aim in most weapons, Epic decided to offset the crosshair a little bit to the right or left (relative your weapon position), in order to NOT loose accuracy in most weapons (specially shockrifle, sniper and other precise weapons).

However, since this offset is constant, in some weapons (like the ripper) it may be a bit off (since all weapons have different firing offsets), but centering isn't the ultimate solution either.
The correct way Epic could have done this is:
- Either make like Serious Sam: move the crosshair showing always the actual location your shots are going to in that exact moment if you fire;
- Make a trace from the center first and shoot/fire projectiles with the respective adjusted direction to hit exactly where you pointed to.

But instead they decided to make it general and personally, I use right view and I have still no problems in headshoting anyone even from far, although with the ripper and rocket launcher there's sill a noticeable offset indeed.
