Can I extend a copyrighted class and publish the childclass?

I wanted to extend the main class from this package:
unrealtournament.99.free.fr/utfiles/index.php?dir=GameTypes/LMS/&file=TeamLMS.zip
to make "LastAgentStanding" where everyone has one life only and if you kill someone, that someone becomes your clone(a bot that looks like you and it's in the same team of yours).
If you're about to die and you have clones or if you just want to do it, you'll be switched into one of your clones.
So my question is, can I extend TeamLMS and publish the new package which extends it even if it's copyrighted?

CTF4 wouldn't exist under that pretext, if you don't repackage/steal/republish the author's files go ahead.

It does and they do. There's a couple hundred CTF4 maps, CTFM also is for the gametype, and bots handle it great.

I personally prefer a game mode in it called Elimination. Each time you get a point, whichever team's flag you scored with... that team loses a point. If a team gets negative points for whatever the final score is (say 5) then that team is removed from the game.

It's fun!

And some of the maps for it are truly sick!

I bet you can use all those maps with my Monster TDM/MegaDomination junk.

If I am able to get back to that project, Monster CTF is/was gonna be next.
(2-4 bases, optional monster team, or just support for monsters being there etc...)

Made a few test attempts at that after I got the TDM/DOM stuff working mostly right, but
CTF gets a bit trickier.

Back on topic:

The only copyrighted classes that I know of as far at Unreal/UT99 is concerned would be the ones
included with the game.

You can extend any of those and publish the stuff as long as you are not charging for it.
(In that case I imagine you would need to contact Epic and get a contract where they get most of the money.)

If you are talking about extending some crap that a random knucklehead like me wrote and released, well all that
is all Epics anyway. It is nice if you try to contact the mod author for permission and all that shit, but legally it matters
not to either of you.

Now if you are talking about extending classes that were included with some game other than Unreal/UT that is based on the Unreal/UT engine
and published by some other game company that licensed the engine from Epic. I am not sure on the details there.
In that case you might get sued twice..... :loool:

And a recall. If some mod is obfuscated and protected running in a server and not shared, anyone else might proceed in rewriting a similar thing way optimized (like Higor said) and is a matter of time until your nobody will be interested about obfuscated one as long as it will be "OUT-DATED".
I was writing by example a MonsterArena2, a different build (unshared) and Bot code from it written in an empty page, I mean I have composed that with no code-base. Do I need to claim "my property" that thing ? No, it's useless, other one can rewrite a similar thing sharing it for free and can be even better than mine. So ?
Just rewrite it and get rid of CopyLeft related ways, do your own one.

you canot do teams with x 4 just like siege.Becouse the Original ut99 can only make 2 teams in internet play.
So if you use command !teams the people who play will getting unsorted teams, and makes a mess from that.
Just like the x4 ctf game.
