Monster Hunt & Monster Arena

Post by EvilGrins »

When Monster Hunt first came out it included a 2nd gametype with it: Monster Arena. Same basic concept with a slight variation. MH maps tend to involve gameplay where you fight monsters while trying to achieve a certain goal/mission, whereas MA involves fighting past an assortment of other monsters in order to kill a Boss monster.

When I first got Monster Hunt I didn't have internet access.

Since playing online I've learned 2 things:

1) For whatever number of reasons, Monster Arena didn't catch on. I've got a tab for it on my server browser but nobody is ever playing it.

2) The Monster Hunt games I've played seem a mix of both gametypes. Either to achieve a goal or get and kill the Boss.

My question is this: Are the maps significantly different from each other or will changing the 'MA' prefix to 'MH' enable easy gameplay with everything functioning normally?

i never played MA but i know that MH has a MonsterEnd actor or something like that, its placed at the end of the MH map and when a player touches it (usually accessable only after killing the final monster(s)) the game ends. Dunno how MA works

A lot of the MH maps work like that but a lot of them have you fighting past a bunch of monsters and then either going thru a door or hitting a switch and the map ends.

What you describe is exactly how MA works. It was just pure monster on player warfare.

MH actually absorbed MA as mapping developed. Most MH maps have an MA-style ending of a large, powerful boss. There are a few MA maps that were converted to MH you can still find (InDerDisco comes to mind) but MA was dead out of the gate.

Actually, there is one aspect to Monster Arena I've seen tons of people ask about for Monster Hunt.

In Monster Arena you are not forced to use teams skins. All players are generally using their normal skin.

From what I've come to understand, lots of people would prefer to play Monster Hunt without team colors but can't figure out how.

Isn't it MonsterHunt2Gold that does that?
I know JackG did it though where you can have any of the colors.

In the MH2Gold download there are skins that let you use whatever color you want (default models). MH2 is not required for this and they will work on any server but they are specifically made for MH. I went ahead and made a separate download for the skins: http://www.gopostals.com/MH2/OptionalSkinspackage.zip

It's a little hefty (24MB) but it has all the redirect files included too. Usage is a bit tricky: You select Red Team *then* select an MH skin and it will be different colors. I hacked other team colors to be "called" red but actually "be" other colors. You'll see what I mean if you use it.

I don't have Monster Hunt Gold. I still have the original version...

...I'm a very "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda guy. Hell, I was still running Windows 98 earlier this year.

The original Monster Hunt works just fine so I've never seen a reason to upgrade it.

On a random note, I would like to specify that I'm using the original version of Monster Hunt. It's due to this that I'm confused about certain things as the newer versions have features the original doesn't. Like how in Fuzz Ball's MH games you can hurt the other players.

Though the original version has a feature the newer ones clearly do not. You can choose in MH to not use team colors.

I rarely use this option.

This depends more on the server game settings than on the game type ...if an admin wants to have friendly fire in MH, then he will activate it.

Even if it's not part of the gametype? The MH I'm familiar with doesn't have a friendly fire option, there's no way to adjust it. You can't hurt your teammates unless you resort to harsh language.

All game options in UT "stack" unless they are specifically addressed in the mod. Think of it like this: when you set up a server you assign a certain number of player slots. Now no matter what type game you run you will have that number, even though you didn't assign it in the mapvote or gametype setup. Friendly fire is like that too. Once you set it it stays throughout subsequent gametypes. MH is basically a team deathmatch so FF is set in the teamDM settings:
[Botpack.TeamGamePlus]
bBalanceTeams=True
GoalTeamScore=30.000000
bPlayersBalanceTeams=True
bNoTeamChanges=False
FriendlyFireScale=0.000000
MaxTeams=2
MaxTeamSize=16
FragLimit=30
TimeLimit=0
bMultiWeaponStay=True
bForceRespawn=False
bUseTranslocator=True
MaxCommanders=0
bNoMonsters=True
bHumansOnly=False
bCoopWeaponMode=False
bClassicDeathMessages=False
