Mapping for UT99

Post by smeerkat »

Hi everyone, glad to see UT99.org is still online! 8)

I recently upgraded my computer, so I would like to install UT99 and Unrealed. What is the latest version(s) I should get ?

Edit: should I get UT version 227 and UED 2.1, or plain vanilla ?

Secondly, is there a server that is hosting community maps ?

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, so are there any issues I should be aware of ? Either gameplay or the editor.

I still have the original GOTY cd. Do I just need to download the UT 436 patch ?

If it is the GOTY version, than the patch may not be needed (some copies are already at v436, while some are v432).

As for 227, that is mostly for Unreal, not UT99.

GOTY edition is 2 CDs and patched to the final v436 (v451b will break UEd)
If you have 1 CD, you have lost 1 or have a pirate copy... or you got mugged by Steam into buying half of the GOTY ed.

Unreal and UT99 share many similarities, and you can swap between UE2 and UE2.1 as long as you do not use items lacking in the other game.
UEd2.1 is great for building the BSP, and placing decos, but stick to adding actors in the editor for the game intended for play. (basic pathing is also better in UE2.1).
UEd2.1 supports more brush import/export options, which makes things more convenient.
Unreal 227 supports "Static meshes" like UT200x. You cannot use these in UT99

Both games can be made to play each-others maps, if you add the missing resources that have been patched to work in the "wrong" game.
