Number 1) Basics are here

Number 2) For advanced mapping ignore mappers and listen at coders - MH MyLeveling is a bit tricky;
Number 3) Original hints and tutorials are still at Shrimp's page;
Number 4) I'm interested about other hints - I'm willing to learn more;
All right, I'm eyes and ears.

I know about that, other may not know that. Thanks for sharing. Although I and others feel the need to have 1 single item to provide everything.
Yes, MH is about all I ever map, except for a couple of maps, so I might as well share my knowledge with the rest of the world. :D

So I will start my tutorial on MH after all :D. Starting tonight. :mrgreen:
Ok, send me a PM when your PDF is ready. I'll need time to make a proper video.

Since making 1 big file at all once seems to much work, I decided to split into parts, and later on combine them to be 1 big file

Here is the first step.

MONSTERHUNT TUTORIAL PART 1

This covers - MH generally, backstory and installation

http://crystalunreal.com/Downloads/Mons ... _Part1.pdf

Part 2 will be actual mapping and progressing, and inspiration from maps.

comments, tips and improvements are welcome.
Enjoy!

Some personal opinion
Somebody said that Shrimp went busy to make MH mod not that much friendly at options... To be honest myths are not a part of my real life and neither in gaming life.
To summarize simple with less philosophy:
Dudes, MH mappers, learn a bit of UScript and mapping rules are YOURS. I'm serious when I'm saying learning and not guessing or mooing around.
Consequences:
More people will want to get involved in stage into a nice competition.

Asking mappers to learn UScript is like to ask designers to learn to be coders.

Yes, it's possible, and some can do both, however while they have things in common, they still require fairly different mindsets, hence generally when one excels at one of them, it's generally not that great at the other.
If more mappers start using UScript as you are requesting, your nightmares about bad code will only become far far worse.

Instead, is generally preferable to have coders build the required tools, and have designers use such tools instead, having both parties do what they do best, increasing the overall content quality.

The problem not described nowhere is that some stuff done by coders for mapping was doing evil effects being wrong used. Samples are Precipationgenerator bad configured, default counter, bad movers setup, and so on. By understanding them a bit, not really to do things all time, will except admins from messing up with a ton of versions, ALL of them bad. That's the hint of custom mapping for custom games not copying dumb things done by others.

In these MH specific tutorials I would like to see settings, explanations, and How to not do. Which one can explain them ? That one understanding them, and definitely not a designer out of tech skills.

It's been my experience that it's best for mappers to explain settings versus coders doing it. I can guarantee you that if Terra and I explained the same thing his explanation would be WAY more user friendly. I compare this to being in Teamspeak with Hitman's group (bear with me). Those guys will often switch languages to more easily convey a difficult idea and it works for them. As an English-only speaker I'm often lost at what just occurred and it takes me effort to keep up.

Coders do this same thing. We often slip into concepts that aren't easily understood to the average mapper/player to explain the problem or issue. If I tell you guys "I think this is just simply not getting replicated online correctly" you know what I mean and already know where to look to fix it. The average player goes "Can I adjust my NetSpeed to fix it?"

I'll give you a perfect example. You guys all know BBDrac's tutorials? Some years back I explained from a coder's perspective some of the ideas that were difficult for a mapper like him to understand because he very rarely encountered these actor properties. We did some back and forth until he got it and then he rewrote his tutorials in an accessible way that I could never do. Everyone wins like that. Correct information is shared and it's done in a way that Joe Newmapper can understand and apply to his new hobby.

TL/DR: Let Terra do this. He will do it the best of all of us, just be available to offer proofreading/corrections/advice but let him word it his way.

Good, I'm looking at stuff.

@Terraniux
I was working at a (du) map for making paths patcher module. Map was a bit buggy - tutorials were probably poor. As a "troll" recommend me something as a patch badge for a bit of fun around those Bot Haters or such...
If you feel the need for some "game-revenge" make some statue or whatever thing using max 8 textures in a decent size and give that to me for creating a deco-badge nearby first spawn location (aka SpawnPoint - bad term anyway).

Wow, these are some very nice inputs. Very good posting. 8) :tu:
Yes, I am accepting to corrected, but also expect to be accepted. That is my term of saying

Very interesting that you opened this in-topic-subject. It is indeed a problem for me that I encountered over the years.
I'd like to code someday for UT, but It is scary for me, I genuinely admit that. It may spoil the fun of mapping, big time.

I made something quickly in paint. You can remove my name in paint, if you scratch ( Me -terraniux away or box it white )
How are you thinking about this? I call it The different dimension collision.

But yes I am willing to add a lot of CODING / value adding topic links / articles if you want. I am the one the making, but together we are the greater people! :thuup:
Show me some good links / articles / and I add them, with all necessary credits.

This is very motivating, thanks all :thuup:

< note if this should be discussed in another topic let me know > Then I open a topic with this post.

In simple terms if you add an actor to map and then you click on EditScript (not for editing no worries) and you can see "//fixme" dumb strings, this means that actor is NOT READY - it's a trouble maker. This is just a tiny start. In time, moders mappers are going to start being more familiarized in scripting, first contact is like for virgin females case, and then becomes a simple protocol. It's not that scary after all.

I think you have it with the exception that the mapper block should be in the middle as it pertains to community outreach and conveying ideals and tutorials. Generally when a coder makes a tutorial it's almost entirely for the rest of the coder block and some bleed-over to the higher level mappers. A good example of this is "Replication Deobfuscation". No player will make it past the first couple of paragraphs, most mappers won't get past the first section. Coders however pour over this their entire career, returning to it as concepts gel in their understanding.

When a mapper makes a tut it appeals to a much larger audience. Most players end up opening the editor and spending some time learning the basics so they can play better. That's why it's so important that mappers get it right the first time.

Those wiki things are interesting indeed - I don't want to be OFF-Topic at moment but last time I have done several deals with no pain. Separate server stuff, separate player things - working and initialized by an external thing with no relation with any of two above things, so I don't have any pain. However these things are happening in a... MAP. If that one is badly screwed I have no hopes... and I had such a case...

It's a very sensitive problem to convince mapper to not try to be more special than is recommended and letting environment to do the rest. This might be a nasty problem based on rebel people which intend to break rules all the time - de-intersecting brushes as a sample - some people are ignoring this and then... Editor is nasty not them.

I thank you Jack and Nelsona. You both are wise men.
Yes , please let me do my thing from my perspective. For only want to help and expand this -- to create more exiting fun and happiness for all.

But I am struggling to make an conclusion of your answers, is your advice to encourage mappers to code or not code ? As I see Sektor (nelsona) POV, -- just do it :rock:
While you Jack is saying, mind your step.

I am going forward with the tutorial as I see fit. All input of yours will be credited in it.

I don't think anyone should be discouraged from learning anything. It's just that in my opinion it takes a good mapper and a good coder to make a decent project. It's very hard for one person to fulfill both roles and it not be a full-time job. The very best projects tend to be ones where mappers do their thing and request what they need from coders that they can't do. I love filling this role, in fact I'm the silent contributor to three ongoing projects right now. Anytime the mappers hit a roadblock or need something custom I step in and provide it and then they get back to doing what they do.

You yourself would have benefited greatly from this arrangement for your contest map. Had Nels scripted up your "thing" it would have been exactly what you envisioned. It's a great symbiotic relationship when it's done right.
