BunnyTrack.net BT Mapping Contest coming soon (€200+ prizes)

Post by Dizzy »

Hello all

In the coming weeks, BunnyTrack.net will be launching our first BT mapping contest.

It's open to absolutely everybody of any skill level who would like to submit a BT map.

The details have still to be decided, but we know there will be at least 200 Euros worth of cash prizes to be won (funded by ourselves, not via donations). The deadline will be realistic so mappers will have plenty of time to work on their maps.

Preliminary details can be found at the following page:
http://bunnytrack.net/contest

I'll post updates or answer questions here and will announce when the contest officially "starts".

Well I guess this would start after the current ut99 mapping contest extension(of one week if I remember good), the poster has a very cool design anyway .o.

I always wanted to try my luck with BT maps, since there's where you can get very creative without worrying about bots and the like, and since the map is the star of the show in this gametype.
But it won't be this time though, the last contest tired me to no end and I already planned to do something else afterwards.

Still, looking forward to what people will come up with for that contest, keep us updated please. :tu:

I don't have the patience for jumping maps, even way back in Atari days LoLzzz.

Glad you are doing the contest though. :D

Yeah....wish I could try that. Not at all good with BT maps. Playing them that is. Making them would be too terrible. It would all be easy.

As someone not that great in BT maps either, an easy map is not a bad thing. What I personally enjoy in BT (although I haven't been playing it since several months), is not the clever jumping and skillful dodging with the right timings, it's actually to explore these maps, so I personally prefer maps which are gorgeous and rather adventurous, with clever puzzles rather than ones relying on pure skill alone.

Having that said, not sure what in this kind of contest BT players will value more: the challenge or the beauty and cleverness of the map.

If I were them I'd go for the latter. There are a lot of bad looking maps. A lot like MH.

BunnyTrack is so much more than jumping, though. I wish people could see some of the insanely high quality maps which have been produced over the years.

The obstacles are extremely complex and diverse.

Here are some videos to illustrate that it's not just jumping - sorry about the potato quality, but it's all I can find:

That is certainly interesting. Never mapped for BT I think. I might join, maybe. Thanks for sharing the message :tu:

Wow, nice. I see what you mean,

Actually If I did some BT style map, I would lean to making it an SP map. or MH. or some combo with enemies.

I decided against making a Chaos UT map as I never actually played it, but I have a ton of ideas for this type of map. Count me in, any mods I need installed or will this be compatible for Vanilla?

His server doesn't require maps to have mods in them, so I think a vanilla map is good .o.

Nope, BT maps are made just like regular instagib CTF maps... with obstacles.

However, usually they are "doubled" which means they contain two copies of the full map - one specific to each team. This allows each team to "race" each other. This isn't essential, but some servers will refuse to host maps which are not "doubled". There is a quick way to do this.

If you want an example of a truly excellent BT map, check CTF-BT-Mausoleum by Splashy and Lorgic which I consider a masterpiece.

You can of course use custom actors or scripts in BT maps if you wish. Some good examples of this are in the maps:
• CTF-BT-Frozt by Drunklove (he uses custom bouncing spheres to great effect)
• CTF-BT-Absolution][ by Raylen (uses Furrymover or similar to create extremely complex triggered mover combinations)
• CTF-BT-Amplitude by Roel (uses a lot of stuff)
• CTF-BT-Troitsky by Raylen (has a "basketball net" type system and a cool imitation chessboard)
• CTF-BT-LastHour by Null (uses swJumpPad for extensive kickers and UT's "bouncing" bug to great effect)
• CTF-BT-HeartCollector by Bloeb (uses the "BT Normal Weapons" package which allows the impact hammer etc. to be used to boost players higher)
• CTF-BT-DraculasCastle by h0ntr (uses floating crates)
• CTF-BT-Aperture by Roel (an awesome Portal-themed map)
• CTF-BT-Nightfall][ by Night Terror (has a wooden crate "dispenser" which re-generates a crate once the existing crate is destroyed)

However usually custom actors are not necessary to make a great BT map.

The best thing to do is to join the BunnyTrack.net servers and play a few good maps to get familiar with how they're made. Type "open bunnytrack.net" in the UT console to join, and then saying "!vote" will open the mapvote window where you'll see a list of recommended maps sorted by skill level.
