The End. Enjoy my junk while it still exists.

Salty? Yes. Upset? Yes. Fed up? Definitely. So sue me.

No more maps from me - really. No more. None. Cya. Enjoy the junk I've released over the years, if you can even remember any of them. It's all been a catastrophic waste of time and effort - and for what? Nothing. Maps, (not just mine), all get forgotten in a matter of days, so what's the point? :|

Has this anything to do with the discussion we've been having over at the main contest topic?

Either way, here's the thing: if your entire reason of developing maps is to have them actively played and remembered, and to win contests, then no matter how good you're at it, it won't really work out.

Developing any sort of content for this game is both about the journey and the destination, and always regarded as a hobby and a relaxing activity, and hobbies and relaxing activities are never a waste of time, they're a productive use of your free time in one way or another.
It may indeed happen that the destination for something you created may not be what you imagined, hence making you sad about the result, but if you call the journey itself a waste of time, then what you're telling us is that you didn't have any fun creating it.

There are a ton of things I developed and spent a great deal of time on them, sometimes weeks, sometimes months, sometimes almost a year, and which ended up being discarded without being released, or released and not really be to anyone's taste or easily forgotten about, or refactored from scratch, sometimes as recently as within this very year and not only for UT.
Yet, I don't consider it as a waste of time, as I had fun doing it anyway and I learned many things along the way which will help me to do better and have more fun.

I mean, even now, I am doing a map, yet while I know it will be tried out by some after I release it, I don't expect anyone to remember it after a week or so, but I am having fun doing it, and it's always something I can later on get back to so I can check where I can improve in future work.

In the case of your map, it could be perhaps be used for iCTF, which seems to me its main purpose even, and iCTF is still popular nowadays so it's something that maybe players could try, and W00T maps are particularly popular there.
I would even say that some of your existing maps are still played nowadays (at least I remember playing some maps which seemed to be your work), so you're already in a better position than most in that regard.

This is the dark side of having a contest. There's about an equal mix of people who don't give a fuuuuck if they even get a vote, they just want to have a reason to open the editor. The problem though is that the other half hangs a lot of worth on what they do by the reception it gets. What to do about it? I don't have a clue honestly but it hurts to lose good mappers to discouragement.

Rep, swing by my TS and let's bullshit some. I'd like to get your permissions on map work to continue with BRUT in a way that I want to keep going with it. I could use some mapper help if you are interested. If you aren't and you are discouraged I understand.

Think big: what about the things that mankind have developed and struggled for if you look - let's say 2,000,000 years - ahead (what is tiny in cosmic scale)? Nothing, its all wasted and nothing will never be mentioned... What's about if your sun will turn into a red giant and eats up the earth in about 8,000,000,000 years? :nonono:

I love your CTF-[R3P]-ACID-REDUX-[SLV] version, it's still played sometimes and one of my own favourite for Strangelove. Also the other SLV maps from you have a nice style. It would be a bad news if you really won't make any maps anymore...
But as the others mentioned already, you can't expect too much from a small game community.

I can't deny it - that's comforting to know,.. thank you. I COULD do a better version of it if I had the patience and will-power (I do seem to keep improving with each new map). It's just SOOO disheartening to know though that the one game I REALLY got into, is as good as dead, it's like how Kenneth Williams felt when his life in the Carry On films came to an end - he was demolished by it and ultimately it killed him - that's almost how I feel about the death of UT99.

Please tell me you have kids. I want to imagine this is how you answer them when they ask those first questions around existential dread :loool:

Man, I just fucking love that this is how you answered his problem. (truth, no sarcasm)

I was the first one entering your testing server for this contest :D I liked the map overall, I guess your frustration isn't related to the effort of making the map, but to the effort of how to make it since UnrealEd is pretty old and very bugged, it's the reason why I made a map which, looks like, it's not that much nice, someone told me I could have put an original concept instead of having to make an awesome looking map and that's what I tried to do.

Let's face it, it's a bit difficult to keep it relaxing, making a map or coding something is relaxing at the beginning, but the more map/code gets bigger and with more details the more it gets frustrated to focus on the overall concept.

Fact is that if you have to make something of which you know that could be discarded by anyone else, it's better to be prepared to it or to keep it simple.

okay... just a few thoughts. fwiw :-| First off, thank you R3plicant - for a really well done, and inspired map. You could have done way less than you did, but you did not. You took your theme and finishing as far you wanted to achieve a high-quality result, and you can be proud of that. Don't go thinking your work or contribution is not appreciated. True, there are not many (of us) ut99 "fans" left, it is 2018 afterall, at least 15 years past what could be considered the "hey day", but please consider that those folks that remain really do love the game enough that new maps _are_ appreciated. Regarding your map, it would be nice to play it with people, and it will be played i'm sure. If not online certainly offline (which is why you gotta fix those bots, or get someone to do it - it is a few hours of work from what I see). I believe that nowadays many more people that play UT99, even occasionally, are playing the game offline. So BOTs that work are important.

About UT99 being "dead": In 2001, I remember UT99 active servers numbered 4-5000. Same with Quake3 servers. HalfLife/Counterstrike had something like 60-70,000 servers. I remember these numbers because that was when I was a player on broadband and on Friday and Saturday nights I'd be in live matches for hours. Then around 2003 or 2004, a lot of barking started about UT99 being "dead" because UT2k4 has taken over and no-one plays ut99 any more. This was so retarded to me because at that point there were still 2000+ ut99 servers, still populated, going regularly :P Yes, there was a steady decline in ut99 (and also 2k3/4) in the following years, but I would guess mainly due to COD, TF, Battlefield, WoW, etc. By that time I was spending my gaming time mapping ut99 (CTC and TimeWarp Crew, etc.) and playing offline games (mostly RPG). All the while peeps shouting "ut99" is dead! Why you still maing maps for it! I'm not sure UT3 caught on in a big way due to all the competition, but I could still find "dead ut99" matches whenever I looked.

If I was not interested in a match with people, I could play a few of the 5000+ maps I have in my collection, providing myself with almost endless ut99 variety. Even culling out a shortlist of the coolest or best-made maps, I can play ut99 (as if it were yesterday) and marvel at the creativity of those days and those mappers/modders. If I have to see awesome pixels I can play dishonored or Crysis or something else real pretty, since I have tons of games available. Lol, most of those are quite "dead" by now. Hell, Unreal (SP) still has a community. So when I hear the "ut99 is dead" shout, I have to laugh a bit. As long as I can load it up and play, it is not "dead". At least no "deader" than the next game. Of course, overwatch, battlefield, cod, density, Fartnight etc. I don't care about.

Okay, well sorry for the long-winded crap - I just want to thank R3plicant for his map - if the bots aren't going to be fixed "officially" the I will eventually fix them in my copy and I will have a good time in the map marvelling at the job well done!

I hope you decide to stick around - this community though small now, has a lot of passion, for sure -
and I'll be checkin' out your other works

Cheers

No, because of the reasons I already explained.

This post is wicked lame, if you are going to leave then either do it silently or leave on a good note. You might come back at some point, so why leave everyone with a sour taste in their mouths? Not that I want you to leave, hell I've been silent for almost a year and have no idea who you are but why leave over a map contest? Make more neat stuff, learn some Unrealscript, make some tracker music, learn to make textures, offer to do some map testing, but don't get silly like this.
