WIP CTF-EgyptSomething

Post by KillRoy1972 »

Just a announcement of a new CTF map I'm working on.

A fun little map with Egyptian theming

No name (suggestions), still very alpha.

Will update in this thread.

Looks nice! Felt like posting some really good looking Egyptian BunnyTrack maps, they might be able to provide you some inspiration!

For a map in its alpha stage, that actually looks quite good. Can't wait to try it out whenever it's finished!

hmm, egypt. I urge you to look at custom textures. Either whole themes or as detail art and trims, etc.

Here's a few maps that use custom textures (based on ut2003/2004, ut2) in combination with some of the
stock ut99 egypt textures. These levels are way beyond most ut99 egypt themed maps regarding look and
feel, pretty much all thanks to custom textures and themes.

These show you custom "egypt" can go way beyond the plain old boring ut99 textures to create new unreal
experiences.

CTF-UTR-Rawash - genMokai
dm-fot-zahri - cooloola
DM-UTR-Sacrimossa - creavion
CTF-FNB-TDC-2374 - fragnbrag
DOM-FoT-SandFlea - hostile - this is more of an example of augmenting egypt with ancient in a good mix, for the textures.

Likely the textures used in these maps are available for mappers to use, provided author credit is given.

In my case, I create many custom textures for use in my maps, and these are always free for other mappers to use
if they want (and many do). Textures are always in MyLevel.

Cheers

Thanx for the input.

I was playing around with some custom textures and i will sure take look at the suggested maps for inspiration or maybe usage.

Custom textures creation by myself are usually altered extisting textures that do not fit the map, but I'm not at all good with photoshop or anything. I have Pixelmator on the imac to do those basic things (see example)
But there is no way a can make a texture from scratch! (maybe with this corona thing a good excuse to start learning..) :lol2:

nice pic - i thought of another one - DOM-Am-myt - by one of the TimeWarp guys - MisterRioes - i'm not sure if you remember him?

This is not a TW map tho, but very well done egypt, imo.

if you don't want to stray too far from the standard egypt look. here he has nice mix of trad and custom, a little less Rorshach than in Zahri, but it worked out great!

And for further inspiration check out Rios' lighting work - it's spot-on. the sourcing is excellent and the shadows alone are supurb!

If you don't have Rorshach texture stock, i can send them your way (zips) not sure his site is still around.
I also have ut2004 egypt stock as well - including panel versions for CTF (red/blue trims) - you're welcome to those as well.

Actually you could save yourself time and just gank/export the MyLevel textures from these maps I mentioned to disk to sort through them. Those guys already used the best ones. There is a lot of rubbish in Rorcache (and other quake resources) you end up sifting through mounds of crap to find the ones usable for ut99. But up to you :)

Cheers

Hm. Liked the original wall textures a bit more for their higher contrast. That choice is - of course - yours. Love how you define edges and forms so clearly, with and without use of color.
