Leveldesign.nl (attention mappers!)

Post by Myth »

Hello mappers!

There is a new community site for mappers. Both Unreal and Quake.

Regular competitions and events will be held as far as the memberbase grows.

The next event is a speedmapping contest, which will be held at the end of january. Currently only Quake 3 is planned, but as long as there are enough Unreal Tournament mappers there will be a UT category in the speedmapping contest.
The key rule is that you only have a very limited time to build a map from ground up. There will probably be other restrictions announced so that you can't build your map before the allowed time.

As far as you're interested in mapping for any game you're welcome on leveldesign.nl

hmm... no ut2004 - weird, you might think that in ue mapping these days more folks would map for 2k4 than ut3...
That said, xyz's kraden map looks best imo, and i find the q3 chromium map an interesting look/feel... The sight might be worth watching

From what I understood - summarized from several beyondunreal.com posts - the situation is like the following:

We, who (still) map for UEngine 1/UT1 do this most likely of the following reasons:
  • to lazy to learn anything new
  • stuck on UT - never liked the newer UT games
  • its easier to map for it
  • "we" just want to make maps within an acceptable amount of time [brush themed]
  • the feeling of nostalgia
The ones who map/mapped for UT2004 do/did this most likely of the following reasons:
  • good graphics (well not anymore for most of them)
  • ready to use static meshes
  • "we" just want to make maps within an acceptable amount of time, if you use a lot of stock material [static mesh themed]
  • many gamers like/liked the gameplay
  • many diferrent themes to choose
  • still user friendly editor with a lot of engine features
  • getting attention with quality maps to enter the industry (however ut2004 is old with its engine now, this former rather big group does not exist anymore)
The ones who map for UT3 do this most likely of the following reasons:
  • fun gameplay (some of them see UT3 as the todays UT1 HD)
  • good graphics (still, even the UDK is many steps ahead)
  • a lot of engine features (still, even the UDK is many steps ahead)
  • getting attention with quality maps to enter the industry - means many great UT3 mapper get a job in the industry, "no" new UT3 maps anymore, or mostly only noob crap

for me its the nostalgia, but im also watchind UDK tutorials now

and i dont think UT3 is UT1 HD, the characters feel more heavier and not so agile.

Its probatly only me, but i never liked to map with static meshes . (both in ut2004 and 3) i preffer brushwork. placing a bunch of static meshes (especialy ut3) makes it some kind of,well it isnt really a new map anymore. making brushes and then quality maps is way more satisfying then using premade meshes. in UT3 you have to either make new textures etc or use the stuff from the game itself, wich is almost all black. only a few good textures. The ones that say that ut3 is the hd version of ut1 are amazingly wrong. in every way ut1 is way way better. Way more gamemodes, better working with the editor. (UDK has a good interface but the ut3 engine makes me go nuts, i always forgot where are browsers are and i only see like 100 buttons. besides that placing triggers etc is even more annoying in ut3. i preffer the old way with an event tag etc.)

but yea no ut2004 maps. eventhough ut2004 is more played then ut 2k7. (thats ut3,in case you didnt know.)

Yes, I think its most likely only you. Brushes are VERY limited and I bet even you will re-consider your opinion soon - maybe quicker as you think.

edit, a quote from a chat (so true):
staticmeshes offer anything you want... provided you know how to work with them
brushes opposed to that are severely limited
but staticmeshes have a bad reputation cuz EVERY RETARD ut2004 MAPPER PLACES THE DEFAULT MESHES AROUND WITHOUT ANY SKILLS INVOLVED

Uhm to the topic itself hmm is ANYBODY interesting to sign up there? For my part, I just hate speed mapping contests or better contests in general.
