Need help on meshes. ps free steam loco!

Post by Rigel »

hello. i hope i opened this in the right place
can anyone tell me or give me a link on how i can create specific sub-menus for my decorations? mesh maker adds my stuff in Actors\Decoration\ and things are getting cluttered up. thank u

okay i'd doubt anyone would need this for their map :)) but this is a fictional steam locomotive (90% done) for any one who's interested. 270 brushes, creating static meshes for smaller objects/wheels/cabin etc would decrease nr to less than 100 brushes maybe. had lots of fun building it

Wait, you did build it where? ....you didn't use UEd right?

odd i know.=)) right now I only use ued for editing/modeling (simply cuz i suck at other apps). are there better ways of creating static meshes for ut99?

wow ....UEd is not meant for modeling ...you should try milkshape or blender ...the second one is a free complete 3D modelling program. A little bit complicated but very strong.
Milkshape is more easy to handle... but is not that powerful.

Ok thanks. if i can import things into ut, then great. do you have any advice on creating actor subclasses for my static meshes?

Well, no ...I am Texture specialist and don't really know about subclasses of actors. Lets wait for some one who can help you.

Ok:
1) UT1 does NOT support static meshes. You can only have BSP and normal meshes.
2) Normal meshes can only have one kind of collision: cylindrical. And it does not rotate with the mesh.
3) BSP is the only one with collision-per-poly.
4) Normal meshes get hidden automatically by the engine when you are not seeing its center location/origin.

In resume: you either keep it BSP if you want accurate collision, at the cost of potential BSP bugs and nightmares to solve, or you use something like MilkShape (recommended for UT alone), 3DSMax, Blender or other 3D app to build the mesh, and import it into UT, but then you can only have a central cylindrical collision and if it gets too big, it disappears once you don't see it's center (there's a tolerance in this transition, so in small meshes you don't notice when it disappears, but in bigger meshes you will notice it well and it isn't pretty).

I hope this clears out most of your doubts.

Thanks. i haven't experimented with larger meshes, so i didn't know that :) i stick to normal meshes mostly, since the engine can handle them much better than bsp meshes, and it makes the maps look more detailed

UT1 has no static meshes! Unreal 227, UT2003/04, UT3 ... those games have static meshes. UT1 has only vertex and skeletal meshes
(to expand Feralis reply a little bit).

BTW: That thing is awesome. I have no idea how something like that can be done with UEd. In fact I think I could not model such train at all. I dont want to guess how long you needed.
I admit: If you would be a 1-post user I would not believe you at all. :lol2:

What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills

Very nice. Although the interior I think needs a little texture work.
Also the wheels look a little flimsy. :P
I'd love to see it lit and placed in an appropriate map/setting.

thanks for the feedback guys. :) it only took me 3 days because i enjoyed building it =))... reduced it to 118 brushes with 10 meshes (cabin interior/wheels/doors & windows/lower frame etc). will release as part of a larger objects pack soon
