Skybox with an eclipse...

Post by UnrealGGecko »

Has anyone tried to make a map with the sun blocked? I'm just keen to know how it might look like.

Yes I did. I lost the map though due to a computer crash.
the map was orbiting a gas giant, along with some other moons.
the star would get eclipsed when the gas giant or one of the moons stood between the point of view and the star

Made one, no.

Seen one, yup.

Don't recall the name. It's one of those borderline Infiltration maps, think it was TigerHunt2.

Could you throw a few pics of the map for me, EG? I'm interested in how did the author made it (the eclipse itself and was it more of a night or day setting). :)

@Rakiayn, sounds like it was tough to do (I guess). Sorry about your PC crash :(

I regularly play Tigerhunt it is a night-time map. The day version is "Appalachian Wonderland".
No eclipse in either.

Currently in the process of making one such skybox for a map. It's a modification of this one http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?p=36771#p36771

Not exactly an eclipse. Night themed map: DM-INF-TigerHunt2. It's got this kind of odd, rapidly moving, dark sun over it.

@Madis, when you finish it, could you send that skybox to me? I'd really like to check it out (maybe try to see how it might look like in a map I'm going to make)
@Grins, I see... No eclipse :( Oh well, thanks for the screens!

Is this somehow a solution? http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2456
Who wants to try a eclipse now?

I tried that first and it seems pretty intensive as far as performance goes, at least with SLV+UT+lots of deco meshes.

I would think an attach mover sun thing with a light (maybe a corona too) that moves behind a solid planet (maybe a block all so that it blocks the light from coming through). Or the opposite....an attach mover solid planet with a blockall to block the light, moving in front of a sun thing with a corona.

edit: I was curious if I could actually make this work...

So I made a sky (zone info only not skyzone).
Set the zoneinfo to rotating (I just stole face's skyzone and made it plain zone info).
Then I made a nonsolid zoneportal box with a skyzone in it.

It didn't work. I am guessing that rotating sky has to be used on a skyzone and not just a zoneinfo.

Only thing I can think of is to do a multi skyzone inside a kind of building or something.
Put skyzoneinfo zero in that building but put a nonsolid portal cube around it. Then zone the area outside the skyzoneinfo zero to use skyzoneinfo1 backdrop the windows and ceiling and make a sky with a rotating skyzoneinfo1.

In the map use skyzoneinfo zero and maybe it will work. You have to put the planet you want to eclipse the sun with way out in the sky of the building (that will be backdropped skyzoneinfo1) so it will look like the planet blocks the sun (sun is part of the rotating sky).

Complicated but it might work.
