Hi all,

This is a large urban map with many high detailed buildings you can enter such as churches, offices, shopping malls, residential houses, and hotels. There is even a car museum and casino that you can enter. This map is a huge city that is fun to explore and includes many drivable vehicles. Warehouses and factories have drivable forklifts. Roof tops have flying cars and helicopters that you can pilot. Also there are 82 different cars you can drive that are primarily found in parking lots. Even snow plows and Santa's sleigh are drivable vehicles in the Christmas edition. This is a large scale Grand Theft Auto free roam city for exploration or for battling bots.


**Also a warning; this map does require a very good PC, preferably with a graphics card instead of integrated graphics. Also a modern D3D9 or newer render with S3TC enabled is recommended. ---Also this map is only for the hardcore UT99 fan who will dl a huge file to explore a giant city.


There is DM-S3TC-D3D9-KingJoshCity and DM-S3TC-D3D9-KingJoshCityXmas. The Xmas edition is different because it has snow, snowmen, christmas trees, different skybox, 2 drivable snow plows and a drivable / flyable Santa's sleigh. The map is fun for exploration - there is pond to swim in, 2 shopping malls to explore, 1 casino you can walk around in, 3 cathedrals you can enter, 1 factory , 1 warehouse, 8 hotels to explore, 13 offices / call centers to explore, 1 car museum, 28 residential homes to explore, and over 80 vehicles to drive and fly.

I am aware a 500mb zip file might be unpractical for some, sure is a good thing is almost 2014 and we all have highspeed internet connections and massive storage space.. But remember not 1 single building uses the same texture on the outside each of the hundreds of buildings has its own 1024x512 or 1024x1024 texture. Also for the floors and indoors walls its very rare that you will see the same texture twice, (most indoor textures 512x512 or 1024x1024). Also for the 82 cars, each uses a 512x512 texture. The skybox has muiltple 1024x1024 textures used. Also all 3 churches have different stained glass textures etc... Also I had to make a few deco packs- HolidaySigns.u, KingJoshDecos.u, KJExcessive.u, XMasKingJosh.u.... A total of around 500 decorations in those 4 files and each one of those models has its own texture / textures - some 512x512 for decos..... Thats how the filesize got so crazy. Also full credits of the texture resources / websites are in the Readme.

I do realize 99% of everyone wont download because of filesize, but then again I dont care. For those who do DL it, youll need a good PC and I also recommend a modern render with S3TC option enabled. Also recommended brightness is 3/10 or 4/10.. As far as the uses of the map - its fun to explore buildings (especially the 3d mall) and test drive / fly different vehicles. I also did use PathLogic to add over 1,000 pathnodes and rebuilt the paths and added 20 playerstarts and tested the map, so you might also have some fun with some vehicular bot slaughter once you have explored the city alone.

thanks metalfist, no it wasnt tested online. I assume no admin would ever put a download file this big on server, primarily offline use I think.

Also to see Santa's sleigh in action you can go to minute 8:45 in video :tu:

Sadly I don't really can test the map Im lagging a bit, but if I will have a better PC I will playing in this map
lol @ The KingJoshCity.utx file size, thats a "bit" big :D
And thanks for your work, I think thats the best quality city map what I ever seen!

All I can say is it blows me away how much time you (or others) put into it and we get it for free.

I have not looked yet but file size or download time should be the least of your concerns. I don't care about the cars and things so much, but it's really hard to find textures, or deco, for that ONE floor or wall that isn't from UT stock files.

Why does the city have the Death Star over it?

For that matter, why does every map with a Death Star always have the unfinished looking one?!?

and @ EvilGrins, to answer your question the masked DeathStar texture is a popular skybox texture. Imo it is humorous and makes the background a little bit more interesting :D

What mutator are you using? Some of those're ut2004 weapons!

watching your vid, looks like you've got some rendering issues. Or, more exact, memory. Your movement is choppy, helicopter's blades aren't moving... or is that just how the video turned out?

well my video card recently broke, so i have integrated motherboard video card until install a new video card. So recording a demanding map makes FPS not smooth. Also heli blade is still. But the reason you see some UT2004 weapons is because the weapon locker gives you some UT99 weapons and some 2k4 weapons. My friend blackcheetah converted ut2k4 to ut99 a while back.

Also I forgot to mention I recommend to not use any mutators with this map, just make sure it stays error free.

I'm sure you put lot of work into that, it's a nice "tech demo" I guess. Out of curiosity I downloaded it to see what it is like.
First thing however I noticed that framerate is absolutely horrible (sub. 30) on quad core PC with Radeon 4890, even with AA disabled.
It was interesting to run through, but it probably won't be very suitable for DM :)

Thanks Josh...downloading now. I will post some informed comments after playing. Pretty crazy size mate! Not a bad thing at all, just saying. :)

Raynor....1GB of VRAM is the problem, no doubt. I am currently on a 7850 2GB (with a 280x 3GB on the way), so I will make some comments on framerates when I post back as well...see if it is the map or the hardware.

I believe it's more likely that UT1 engine isn't optimized for such complex environments. Same hardware can run visually far more intense UE2 and UE3 maps without any problems mostly at 50-60 frames per second so it's not exactly VRAM issue.

Perhaps, but now having run the map with 12xAA (edge detect) and 16xAF smooth enough and without AA altogether silky, I would say it is a bit of both. While UE1 may not be optimized for this type of gameplay, throwing more gpu power and memory at that type of problem helps a lot.

The map overall...interesting stuff, but as Raynor said, not so practical I suppose. The whole thing seems a bit unnecessary....? UE1 doesn't make enough detail distinction to warrant such a big area; things look the same pretty quick making the sheer scope seem redundant. What with nothing to do in all of these buildings and rooms, there just seems to be no real point to going in at all.

Nitpicks: The music bothers me. A bit too goofy, making the map seem somehow....childish?! Maybe not the right word...gimmicky maybe? I am not sure how to describe it, but it doesn't do justice. The map is far too bright as well. Even with the brightness turned way, way down, things are washed out and just look bleached or something. Again, a real distraction making the map seem somehow more of an experiment than an actual map. The lightning gun has some issues as well; half of the weapon - the lower half - is invisible. Also, primary fire on the UT2004 rocket launcher is soundless.

Anyhow...sorry to complain/comment negatively at all. Certainly a landmark achievement! Heck of a lot of work there and a first to have a map download over 500MB! Yes, it is a heck of a thing and your efforts are top shelf mate.

What I can say the buildings look great from the pictures... only the skybox and the brightness need fixing.
For such a complex map does the clearly visible cubic skybox and the too bright Zone-light kill the atmosphere

Well that was weird, but cool.

You have a trove of possibilities here, I liked the whole thing the brightness being too bright is probably the most problematic.

So, I had to tinker a little being such a great test bed of mappage.

I went into the level properties and changed brightness down to .125 well it helped a lot but things start getting grayed but much better. I would say about .3 to .5 max since I run things bright-ish.

What I would do, now that you finally completed it, LoL.

Chop up the map, I only looked at the city one, and this map is just dieing to be an MH map, or some SP version.
All in all you did a great job, my rebuild time was about 6 minutes less than 7. So if you made sections with a goal for each it would rank pretty well for MH and no framerate troubles.
What is odd it seemed slower before I did a rebuild, when I played it in the editor it seemed to act better, possibly my CPU started into overclocking but it was smoother. I think the main frame problems would be the higher radius lighting, not the big texture file.

I would say to make 6 maps out of it, add some pawns and goals, (e few ventilation hidden areas never to be found for secrets).

I would trash any and all references to UT2004, the cars look stupid with that damn spawn pad, I wish UT2004 never did that forcing people to use that inventory junk. Get rid of those particles weapons lockers etc etc.

Map has great potential moving forward, has a great array of looking around to key one in for places due to all the textures.

I like it, but seems a waste without it being a SP or MH fight-goal- fun. not for DM.
