Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
Well stated Jack I agree 100%...
@Hellkeeper - having to be creative within a budget - you should feel really good about Qesh, that's a good example
I currently have two "Hall of Giant Midgets" maps, one with basically the same layout as HoG (but about 1/2 size) and the second has more ramps (sorta shifted sideways by one, so there's two high ramps - if that makes any sense) gameplay in both is different - the second one having more "ramp" is more difficult to make a grab and initially evade the snipers. Both maps are quite fast and nasty compared to HOG - from the main zoom you can make it to the redeemer in one "long" xloc throw (usually 2). Both seem good for max 12 players. Trouble is the size of both is 550K ( with the brushes and unneccessary actors deleted). So I need to get rid of 40K somehow and I think messing with lighting is my only option - I could further simplify the brushwork but i don't really want to do that
I should probably do a quick beta of both layouts to "pick one" based on some feedback... then I have only one map to worry about - Any volunteers?

Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
Some news about IronGuard...
I made the optimization mentioned in page 1. It wasn't enough. Filesize, with screenshot and 512k logo included, was 583kb.
In order to reduce the filesize, I'm forced to do at least one of these things:
1)Deleting lighting AND bot-pathing (Hell no, nigga!);
2)Deleting lighting AND all pickups (Hell no, nigga!);
3)Deleting some rooms (I deleted one, filesize is now 520kb, forced to remove/reduce one more...).
In other words, the map will look a little different from the screenshots I posted some time ago...
---= EDIT =---
I have solved the problem with an alternative solution, without renouncing to delete anything but a Ripper (which was replaced by a Flak Cannon whose location has been deleted - too close between eachother).
And here it is, Iron Guard, with its 476 kb of space (Including in-game Screenshot and 512k logo, present in-game also).
I tested the map online and no problems so far.
Here's the download link:

Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
Okay here's map #3 - it's a little diversion - small remake of the floaty old CTF Hall Of Giants by Pancho
(this is a remake of the map, not an edit of the map) I built this one from scratch to exactly 512K so it is
simplified a lot, and is more of less the right shape although not exactly proportional...
Seems to plays well with teams of 6 - quite a bit tougher imo than the old original HoG, and that's just with
masterful bots - you do have to run out shooting after a grab - this could be a slug fest with humans (CTF players)
try it and see for yourself
Enjoy!

Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
It really is a fortifying challenge, more gratifying than one might think.
I just know there are those still trying to slim it down, LoL, but kick ass in the contest,
From what I see, we have the best examples on earth, comparing to the 300k 1, 2, 3
Refine your maps, cram as much in as you can, the next map you make without any constraints, will be like "ya I know that".
Try a 300k like a brain burn.
Great job yall, I need to play these, 300k was nice, this is really good.

Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
I have my server up and it will be fully configured by the weekend (it's playable now, just not done). I can add all the maps to one of the mapvote columns if everyone is ok with me scraping this thread and posting them all publicly? Let me know if you'd rather I didn't use your map and I certainly won't. Otherwise I'll have this running for everyone and post back by Sunday.
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
It's OK for me if the others want to try the maps online. Just in case, I have also my server for the testing, if you like to. I've already posted my map into it, and if you guys want to try that on NewNet and see how it works, PM me with your authorization and I'll post your maps into my server too.
Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
I would rather you would not put the current version on the server, I am working on a revision and I will probably finish the V2 this weekendJackGriffin wrote:I have my server up and it will be fully configured by the weekend (it's playable now, just not done). Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST
After making IronGuard and closing my clan because of some little internal conflict I decided I might have enough time to make a second map (Which could be cryptic this time? Maybe CTF? Still don't know) for the 512k contest.
I will update you on this topic. Stay tuned!
