Re: THE 512kb MAPPING CONTEST

Post by UnrealGGecko »

I have a few (stupid?) ideas...

- mesh limit,

- using w00tpads in non-CTF maps,

- a re-do of one of our previous contests (Original map remakes, Season theme, speed mapping or filesize limit.)

I'm interested in there being a new one. :)
You must construct additional pylons.

I'm afraid people wouldn't all be equal depending on how busy they are; you'll never get a period where everybody has 48h at the same time to devote to mappig? :s

In the last 48h contest there where only a few that entered. I don't think enough people can make a finished map in that time assuming they even have enough free time in those 48hours to join and that is without mentioning the fact that not everyone likes working under that much time pressure.
To be honest I think another 48 hour contest is a bad idea.

Then how about a small* map contest where Z-axis gameplay is a must.
Even not so experienced mappers can manage to make a decent map.
No limitation of size or time but room... imagine a map inside of a 1024^ room limit (or even 512^)

Now THIS might be interesting! However I would suggest a size of 2048³ so maps can still be more then a cube filled with a few platforms.
I have looked at some of the smaller maps I have and ALL of them exceed 2048³ in one of more axis so I think it will be a good balance between challenge and space to make a good map.

I'm with memesys, BIGGER maps are better... speaking of which, as far as ideas.

Stretch back, with help from others, I proposed a collaborative map edit to an existing map.

Along the same lines, howabout a mapping contest for a large outdoor maps? Forest maps are fun!

If you want I can drop more files in that G-drive folder which I was showing you. I've done some fixes at a few cubes pretty rammed initially. Target was not only adding a simple wacky MH Bot Support, purpose was improving a bit A.I. behavior as well using custom Navigation Nodes against run and gun pushing at next door.

Edit: According to resources used in Maps, some packages ruin everything. Probably a contest in fixing garbled files will help a lot, too...

This thread has been split from the last competition thread so it can continue.
I had a bit of a mishap, and so most of the posts still have the previous title.
It is messy, and I can fix it if people want, but from now you will get the new title for the thread

A large collaborative project like this one is near impossible to manage. The only reasonable way to manage it would be to assign a parts to people but what happens when someone is unable to work on it for whatever reason?
I like the idea to make a map where everyone makes a chunk of the map but it's simply too hard to do if there are more then a handful of people working on it.

It's a nice idea but making an outdoor map is not exactly an easy thing to do well (or decently). I fear that either only the more experienced mappers will give a poke at it OR we end up with a few decent maps and a ton of crap.

I don't want to be that guy and it's not that I think the ideas are bad or anything it's just that I think it might be a little too ambitious for the scope of this contest.

Of all the ideas I have heard (read) so far I still like Papers volume limited idea the most.

What about single player maps and campaigns?
