Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
I kinda like Paper's idea as well... Not sure on how well it might end up, but I think it's possible to make something with that limit
My work for UT99: Counter-Strike VP, MaleOne+ (now updated), FemaleOne+ and the FemaleTwo220 voicepacks DM-XC-NaliTreeV2 (from the 2012 Xmas Contest mappack), DM/DOM-20AC-CastleGeorgeV3 (from the 20th Anniversary Contest mappack), DM-UFFO, DM-WreckingBall, (NEW!) CTFM-Sundial
my small spec of files at Google Drive
List of console converted maps, models & more!
Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
I like the cubed idea, 2048^3 seems like a good constraint.

Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
If you make mini-maps like 2048 cubed then you are effectively making maps that will never get used again. Very few servers play DM at all, and the ones that do play a specific style like sniper.
512k is a good size to have to work under, it keeps the maps from becoming so big they never get finished but large enough to give room for creating things. How about voting in a single texture pack that can be called from within the map? This could add a central theme to the maps and make scoring them easier. Add an industrial texture pack or Egyptian, whatever. I really enjoyed the Christmas themed maps so maybe one of the resident mappers could whip together a smallish texture file that would lend itself to another fun December?

So long, and thanks for all the fish

I really liked the 512k mappack, the maps you guys made were the perfect size and it ended up feeling like an official bonus pack
personally i'd like to see you guys try a Chaos UT themed 512k contest, but that's just my 2 cents

I hate you lol.....KingJosh wrote:What about city / urban themed map contest?
jk.. but I don't like the idea. I had been abused enough by them already. lol.
... was looking for a gray colour for the font. gray matter.
Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
I like the cube idea, they don't necessarily have to be Deathmatch maps or boring maps, there's much to do in one like closed rooms with secret portals, lifts, fake walls, underwater tunnels. It may not be so big but it can work even on CTF if you know how to make your paths and set up your walls.

Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
Yes they might be even MA maps (MonsterHuntArena), that game-type really lacks at mapping chapter.UTX wrote:I like the cube idea, they don't necessarily have to be Deathmatch maps or boring maps,
Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
Extreme environment contest.
Can have up to 512x512 pixels of embedded or packaged textures.
A custom texture package will be available to all mappers at no pixel expense (TBD)
2000 square units or 50% of playable ground (X,Y axes) must be fully or partially of X(environment) type.
Any standard gametype.
No precipitation generator usage (to be replaced by something that doesn't make RAM usage on a server go to infinite over time).
No custom sounds (play with ambient pitch, you can get anything using standard sounds).
No conversions, start it from zero.
Environment can be anything, as long as it gives the notion it's not safe for the player.

Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest
What about something like the one we did at Nalicity, or was it UP.
someone makes a map, we all use the same map, or something on that order.
Oh it was Theme design contest. (TDC) I think Neonight made the map we used.
2048 is too small, 4096 is a tiny bit big. download my DMroom39 it is 1024 smaller than 4096.
3072 plus some hallways.

Ok ...can someone please translate this for dummies (myself) ?Higor wrote: 2000 square units or 50% of playable ground (X,Y axes) must be fully or partially of X(environment) type.

I'm not a native English speaker and writer... and translating it from Higor to English then from English to German does not compute.
Re: [discussion] Upcoming New Mapping Contest

Must have room in the map to play/run around in, by X & Y level or some X level. Most of other thing can be deco or map design.
So if there is going to be a lot of deco/brushes/whatever, have like 50% even with play space action or using 2000 square unit (any area, long you have plenty of amount if you are going to have much more deco in the map)..
No precipitation generator to be used in the map. (An actor generator.. which can be used in any map but I also don't like these, these thing will spam the log like crazy and it can give you such error to view the log if it's too large and take a long time to download. Which is why I created a nodripspam actor but it doesn't stop everything else.)
