Mapping Contest '15: vote on rules

Post by UnrealGGecko »

We need to brainstorm here... so I took supported ideas (ideas that got at least one possitive coment about it) from here and put them in that poll up there. Poll ends in 8 days. Vote now!

I really like helium's idea but I think there will be more overall interest if the format is wide open (sadly).

Changing the stock maps into a different game type version of themselves with the proper changes so it is not just turning Flags into Control Points or similar small changes.

I vote for the area-size limitation. I'd like something like 3072.
You must construct additional pylons.

i think you should all do a theme based contest, the suggested size based thing is too wonky ...

for example, how do you measure 3072 in terms of space...?

is the mapper supposed to make (whatever layout) added into a subtracted 3072 cube?
or
is the mapper to have 3072 (squared) floor space? and what about two or more levels of z-axis "floorspace"...

this kind of size thing sounds dumb to me... (sorry)

force a theme with no size limit is best ... and mappers should have to make new maps, not remakes of any known or epic maps (no more decks or faces :/

- too many epic map remakes already, imo, let them die!!! make all new designs :tu:

my two cents

the space idea what that the map has to fit into a 2048/3072uu cube. Build what you like and how you like in the same way you make a normal map as long as it fits in the cube.

I like the idea as it will force the mappers to come up with a compact layout on the other hand it's going to be a MASSIVE pain in the ass (the same could be said for the 512k contest)
I'm also ok with a theme like the "Map witch has at least a bit of Terrain/Outdoor in?" might be nice.

Maybe I could get myself around to finish up that old terrain based map, everything else isn't interesting. Unfortunatly, I'm quite busy with DX Mapping, so...

Ok ...I changed my vote for terrain maps. I can create a remake of my Northern Lights map ...with less nasty errors (where you get stuck in the void), more playability and bigger better architecture.
But I'm sure I will need help on bot pathing again...

Such a small map area limitation restricts the usable gametypes to either arena DM or joust CTF with instagib. It looks good on paper as a limit to have to work around but think of the final product that will be packaged for distribution. People play Seige and MonsterHunt and Jets, gameservers that will have zero use for any of these new maps. You'll just be wasting mapper's time if the aim is to make useful projects (IMHO).

No worries, we have convertors I guess, useless maps if are well designed for sure are going to be ported or messed to MonsterHunt in a couple of hours... even to some SP/Coop New Level...

My opinion on themes remains the same as ever.
Best use of Chaos resources, or best use of interactive decos/environment.

I'm not personally a chaos fanatic like you, but I like the interactive deco usage idea.

I voted for the 3072x3072x3072 space limit idea.

I hate imposed themes. The size restriction doesn't seem to be precisely defined at the moment, we'll see, but I find it much more challenging and interesting. I agree that Epic remakes is something that should be behind us, though, no more CTF-Face-EXXtremz-SE-2.8-LIMITED-MCD-cold-666.unr, please god.

Bullshit. My DOM map from last year almost fits inside 3072² save for, like, a lift. Curse almost fits inside this limits and it's not what I'd call an arena map. And they don't make use of the 3072 uu hight either. There's plenty of room to make a map that is not just an empty cube, especially if you pile up levels and link them with warpzones.
And yes, some people play small DM, cramped DOM and tiny CTF. At least I do, that's what I like in UT, I don't give a damn about Monsterhunt. This will not be lost for everyone.
You must construct additional pylons.
