UEd for Beginners

Post by Deadmeat »

Thought this might be useful for anyone wishing to learn how to map for UT99 or who is returning and wants to brush up on all the things they've forgotten (like me!). I found that because UT99 is so old now most tutorials that come up when searching the net are for UT2003/4 and UT3, and those that actually are for UT99 are no longer available. Thought it might be nice to concentrate links for active mapping tutorials in one place to save other people wasting so much time trying to find them (like I did). So, here are a few links to tutorials for UT99 mapping that are currently active (as of 27/06/2008), and I found genuinely useful:

http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Category:Legacy_Mapping
Lots of articles on UT mapping (not all of them are for UT99 though)

http://www.birrabrothers.com/drac/ued2.html
Large collection of tutorials explaining all the basics plus a few advanced things.

http://unreal.gamedesign.net/
These were the tutorials that originally taught me how to use UEd. Whilst they are pretty old and use the pre-436 patched version, the tutorials themselves are still very good for beginners.

http://www.hourences.com/book/tutorialsindex.htm
Couple of useful tutorials at the bottom of the list explaining Semi-Solids, BSP and Zoning in addition to some general gameplay tutorials.

Brilliant tutorial on level geometry

http://teamvortex.planetunreal.gamespy.com/DavidM/
Tutorials on lighting and gameplay

http://www.cliffyb.com/ut-ld-tips.htm
Some tips from CliffyB on level design

And, of course, there are a couple of downloads right here on UT99.org

If anyone knows of any other GOOD tutorials, particularly on more advanced/specific things I'd really appreciate it if you could post the links.

Cheers,

PS, thought this would be better in the mapping forum rather than tutorials forum as I'm guessing this is the first place people are going to look for mapping help :)

Wow, tons of links there! I know this is gonna help me out. :gj:

I agree maybe making this a sticky in the mapping forum would be a good idea.

Here's another tut I found:
