Wow pick something obscure !
Umm, unfortunately not many people here even know what a tracker mod is.
I'm more used to using OpenModPlug Tracker, but only for fixing or converting files.
The Buzz Tracker forum is probably a better place to ask http://forums.jeskola.net

You will find a few people at UnrealSP and OldUnreal that still create tracker mods, so maybe someone there has played with Buzz.

I too use Open MPT, because I feel it better.
Should you switch to Open MPT, I might give you a help on how to use it.

Tracker Music explained:

Let's start from ground up: (all examples are modplug tracker)

1. You can load *.wav sound files into your tracker. These are called samples.
2. Samples can be played back at different frequencies. Playing a sound at double frequency will cause it to shift one octave up while playing it at half frequency will be one octave down. You can play a sample at any frequency and you can cover 8 octaves with 12 semitones in each. Voila, your sample can be used as an instrument.
3. Some tracker formats like fast tracker 2 and impulse tracker allow you to use multiple samples per instrument and also allow you to apply envelopes to instruments. This allows you to perform basic synth-ish features or to implement realistic instruments with a different sample for each semitone.
4. Songs are a sequence of patterns. A pattern can appear multiple times. Like 01012234 ect...
5. Each pattern is build from multiple channels. You always have at least 4 channels (amiga hardware). Each channel represents a single sound source. Each channel has it's volume, panning.
6. A channel is made up of usually 64 rows, each one containing one command. A command can be something like,

Code: Select all

|D#303v32T11
which means: play instrument 3 at 50% volume octave 3 D# and increase the tempo of the song by 1 beat per minute
7. The commands are your alphabet. Learn to abuse them and note that unreal engine 1 doesn't support all of them.

The rest is sound design and music theory.

Here is the lead of a well know module, Aryx with fadeout effect. Load one instrument into slot 1 and it works...

Code: Select all

This is the drum loop from mechanism eight (DM-Zeto), If you look at the number in the second column of each channel, you can see that it uses a variety of instruments, each of them is a different drum sample. Bass drum, snare drum hi hats. The first channel is bassdrum (intrument 10), the second channel is snare with a few different samples, the third channel is hihats and the 4th channel is a drumloop at lower volume to fill in the gaps and make the drum loop sound 'fuller'

One might ask why would someone come up with such an esoteric way to do this? Well, trackers are the oldest type of music editing programs for personal computers. One of the first good ones was ProTracker for the AMIGA and it was built to take into consideration all the hardware limitations of it's time. Back then you only had 4 hardware channels, that's it.

Now if you're still interested, here is a nice video by someone who can actually use these type of trackers:

I wish you good luck and much endurance!

If you use XMPlay to play a few of your UMX files, you will see the codes scrolling up the window as each sample is played, just like in the video Myth posted.
http://www.un4seen.com

Trackers are fairly similar, so once you can use one, it will equip you to use another.
