OwnedWell Shock Domination cup

The OwnedWell website is hosting a "Shock Domination" cup over the next few weeks. It's a shock rifle only mod, but without the instant kills of instagib - most maps having armour and health. And it's played in the context of the Domination game mode with key map points that each team attempt to wrestle under their control.

There's an all-star match due to begin imminently (as I write this) on Sunday 25th Jan on their twitch stream:

Any idea what the map name was?, and more importantly at what point after it was decided upon the remixed version were you planning to tell the competitors.

If it says DOM-Olden as one of the maps then why was a different one chosen and the competitors not told about it anywhere on the forums to practice for it

I'm very confused maybe you can shed some light and throw us a heads-up to clear this up. It wasn't one of those situations where those on the inside got the advantage because they practiced for the correct map? (I hope)

I would if I could, but I have no association with the website or the cup, just posted details here for interested parties - I'm sure you'd get an answer on their forum though, they seem to respond fairly quickly to enquiries

DOM-OLDEN.UNR.uz 02-Jul-2009 05:31 596K
DOM-Olden-sDOM.unr.uz 03-Sep-2010 00:10 560K
DOM-Olden-wtf.unr.uz 05-Sep-2009 08:16 557K
DOM-Olden.unr.uz 05-Sep-2009 08:16 596K

All their other maps will be using this suffix too since it is a sDOM tourney :P

Yep, the sDOM maps are different from normal DOM maps, they don't contain any weapon pickups, and the armor/belt/amp are sometimes in a different place (amp usually requires a team boost to reach). The only ammo is shock cores, and health packs are rarer while vials are more widespread.

So what is "sDOM"? Is it meant to be shock domination after-all? It's still a little confusing that players were meant to know all of this ahead of time

billybill wrote:thanks again maxy. So when the tournament host launches a round the sDOM mutator runs serverside and sets a bunch of custom variables for the pickups in the round, as I suspected that makes it near impossible to practice for. Or does the package get downloaded to the client? Or is it included in the sDOM maps? I am still a little baffled, if it's the former and they don't have a single player mod because they don't know how. All you have to do is let me know and I'll get something up.

The reason I don't have interest in shock rifle arena is because the rage burns inside me when someone shoots a shockball at me when they are in my FOV and they clearly see I have a shock rifle. I can't bear to be insulted and put my rep on the line in case I miss, or something like that. Hence why I made an anti shock noob mutator that auto-combos the balls if they try and do this. No aim insulting takes place. But still in alpha because not without bugs. I can clearly see why it's a high level (tournament) mutator and not used in public servers

Sorry, I don't know much about mapping or modding (why am I even on this forum LOL) so I can't tell you if this mod is server side or not.. Maps are built specifically for this mod though and IDK if newnet allows server side weapon mods and whatnot.

There is no readily available package for download since it's pretty useless to practice with bots - if you want to practice, just join an sDOM PUG on globalgamers.net #iPug channel.

And I don't understand what you hate about the shock rifle. There are no shock balls in sDOM anyway, only primary, so you can't do those overpowered combos or anything.

And I have nothing against the shock rifle I just feel insulted if a noob kills me by playing badly, has a better ping or w/e. Shots they shouldn't get. I absolutely despise newnet. Hello UT2004 died and that mod is crafted especially for them to quit that game and start a community in ut99

I'm guessing at this point the sDOM is built into the maps (I can check this). Although it could be in their cache file or anything. I guess joining the PUG is the only way to find out. Not that it is at all popular this sDOM since there are no public servers with it as far as I know. I do like the map selection a redirect search of sDOM brings up. hah yeah saw the amp and vials on Olden and thought something fishy :P

And from what I understand there is zero pathing in the maps so the bots won't go anywhere....literally.

I assume that as well, but even if there was pathing, bots would probably not play even close to how the mod is played by actual people.

Yes, primary still does 60 damage so it takes two shots to kill a fresh spawn. I don't see why you despise NewNet when it actually evens pings (and, maybe somewhat gives advantage to higher pingers :D )but to each his own. I personally love it because at least there is no stuttering or movement lag. And, I'm sure 2k4 guys wouldn't play UT99 NN or not, since it doesn't have dodge jump

I guess the main reason there's no public servers is because it requires a lot of team coordination (you don't just run around tagging random points, usually you try to face off at one point against the other team; there's team boosts to amp; shield timing, etc). That's why PUGs are played with TeamSpeak.
iCTF, the other mod played by the OwnedWell community a lot is a lot simpler in this regard so it is successful in public servers as well.

Also, guys, signups close February 1st.. So if you are interested, join the tourney now!

billybill wrote:I won't hijack your thread. Here let me give some positivity

- It's keeping the scene going (competitive UT99 whether newnet or not)
- It's domination (controlling the map, has to be good)
- The idea of teams, leagues, a series of games to determine a winner, it's brilliant

- sucks that it's teams, where UT started is 1v1 and much easier to get into & follow for spectators. Look back at those WCG games of the early 2000s, it's raw and what people most want to see from a spectator viewpoint. Games like starcraft 2 capture this perfectly, players are in practice teams but play nothing competitively but 1v1s

(Don't want to end on negative)

What would I recommend for that organizers do to improve?

- Community involvement. Start a betting system, even if there is no numbers attached and the members are merely placing friendly bets to see who can get the highest amount of correct predictions. [sidenote: Could lead anywhere, betting sites taking it up. The statistics of players need to be very accurate for this though and rock solid rules / actions taken against players who rig games or cheat]

- Last I checked newnet had more bugs that can be counted, as you mentioned the laggy players get frags they shouldn't. Must be annoying gibbing someone and pushing them backwards only to learn they have shot you on their screen 1/4 second ago and you are dragged to another position by the server 1/4 second later. In effect delayed Double-K.Os... Try that without newnet, there is no double KOs with any hitscan weapons. Had the same problem when zero-ping was popular and players were downloading torrents. You couldn't hit them because they were warping (packet loss), but if they hit you on their screen their client tells the server to register the hit

- I assume there is some prize money, sponsors are a great way to provide this. And the stream viewer number was not terrible

- The demos should be recorded from the server and released later on for download. "admin demorec" command or "demorec" from the web admin should do this if I'm not mistaken

:tu: Thank you for informing us of this series of tourneys and sending organizers my regards. I'll leave any other thoughts to another time, best of luck and once again respect what you (them) are doing for this game
