Arc 3D Webservice

Post by Dr.Flay »

:?: Ever wanted to simply convert photos into 3D objects ?
Arc3D is a free tool allowing users to upload digital images of a scene to a server where a 3D reconstruction of the scene is performed. The output of the reconstruction, relative camera positions and a depth map associated to each input image, can then be imported into Meshlab for reconstructing a 3D mesh of the scene.

You need to take lots of photos, especially with more complex objects.

Take several photos from different angles, and it will create height and depth info that it converts to a brush for downloading.

Damn it !!! I missed a good snap of a Skaarj the other day. :loool:

Seems like the next progression, digital cameras, cell phones with cameras, that panoramic view file format (adobe apple, then windows) from years WAY back, and now 3D printers.

So I suppose if you take a picture of something and then use a 3D printer is what motivated this.

All very cool IMO.

I have no doubt people will start to use this service more and more, as 3D printers become more popular.
However, some basic modelling skills are still required to simplify models before use in games.

If you have a decent resolution video camera, you could simply move around the object filming it, and take all the stills you need from your footage.
Objects need consistent lighting if you are doing a complete 360.
The object needs to be kept the same size in the uploaded photos, so try to stay the same distance from the object.
With small items you could draw a circle around it, or for a large/out-doors object you may be able to place stones or something as your markers.

Here is a great example of a simple and small object

Ya you would need some jig maybe with a motor and have the camera circle around evenly at the same distance.
