Another startup/performance tip

Post by [JAG]Teabag »

Another tip that also increases the startup, loading and closing of UT plus game play i would imagine...

Default Cache size memory used in UT99 is "4mb" due to the ram avaliable on machines back then, when UT99 was made.
Ideally you want to be taking advantage of the amount of memory avaliable in modern machines.
you want to be using approx 1/2 to 3/4 the avaliable ram you have..

for example if you have 1 gig of ram.
then 1/2 is set to 512.
3/4 would be set to 750
goto your UnrealTurnament.ini and under [Engine.GameEngine] heading
set the CacheSizeMegs=512 (or other according to the amout of ram you have)
then save your changes.

Code: Select all

in you UnrealTounament.ini

[Engine.GameEngine]
CacheSizeMegs=512
same setting should apply for Ued too, it should allow it to run better.

Code: Select all

[Editor.EditorEngine]
CacheSizeMegs=512

Teabag, you're my hero of the week. I have 1 gig and reset it to 512. Runs much better. I did the same with my UT2004.ini where it was set at 32meg. Jury's still out there.

Question: Do you think I could set it to 750 w/o problems? :D

come back

Todd

Edit: UT2004 runs better also. I'm going to pass this on because alot of folks don't know this. Wow. :tu:

Don`t note any difference, either ingame or in the ed. :o
About to be non-active
My very last UT map project: CTF-FacePalm (tropical CTF-Face remake)
Why do I leave? click here
What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills
Thanks to those who visibly supported me until/at the end!

Yea there was a difference... I did this with my system having 256 Mb of RAM, game was running fine but then what i saw after around 10 mins was a popup of low virtual memory and the game crashed :mad2:... So what I think is setting it to 1/2 ur sys memory would be a courageous effort if you are owning less than 256 M of RAM. I have now put it to 32 M and it runs just awesome..

So you need to find out whats the best setting for your sys isn't it..

Rohit

512 is WAY overkill. I have it set 16 and greater values do not affect startup/loading time anymore and back in 1999 PC's did have lot more memory than 4 MB :loool:
