What you should know about video editing suites

Post by Dr.Flay »

If you are installing a full Video editing or MultiMedia suite to create some funky UT masterpieces, then there are some things Windows users should be aware of.

:!: NOTE: Installing software such as this (and mobile-phone suites), will usually install a load of "new" CoDecs/Filters. These will often become the new defaults used by windows.
Companies that develop software like this seem to often overlook their Decoders for some reason, preferring to concentrate on the Encoders (Sony and Nokia are bad for this).

Often you can get a boost in speed with these programs, if you force better/newer Decoders as the system defaults.
There is only 1 tool I know of that will let you change the preferred CoDecs.
GSpot codec information appliance http://gspot.headbands.com
This tool also allows you to access the hidden configuration and info panels of many CoDecs :tu:

Using this tool you can check what the new CoDecs are capable of, then decide if you need to prioritise them.

Useful CoDecs to install, are ones that can use the power of your GFX card to do the decoding.
It is also very VERY useful to get 64bit CoDecs/Filters, if you have 64bit Windows.
The Media Player Classic family of players have some of the most actively developed/updated CoDecs, that support using your GFX card to decode the following formats;
H.264/AVC (MP4/MKV/FLV), MPEG-2 (DVD), VC-1 (HD-DVD/BluRay/X-box), and WMV3 (Windows Media Video)

32 and 64 bit standalone filters are available from;
Media Player Classic - Home Cinema http://mpc-hc.org
Media Player Classic - BE (Black Edition) http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/ (my favourite Vid player).

Win32: Files go in the *:\Windows\System32 folder
Win64: Files go in the *:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder

QuickReg - Register lots of CoDecs/Filters and DLLs with 1 click.

Copy the filters where you want, then drag them to QuickReg and register. You can save the list for the next time you update.

How to manually Install filters.

Read the first line again ;)
Yeah I know it's a stretch, but we don't have a section for guides that are useful to an Unreal related project, but are not specific to Unreal.

Everyone was happy with my tweaking Windows and drivers post, but that is also not specific to Unreal.
Off-topic is too generic a place to put it, but it is aimed at anyone who is embarking on making Unreal videos (obviously this applies to any other project, but so do most Photoshop guides etc.).

By all means, feel free to move elsewhere, but I did not put it there without thought.
