Need Help installing Excessive Overkill

Post by Langley »

I'm having some trouble getting Excessive Overkill installed. I'm working from a fresh install of GOTY edition, disk 1 only, plus the 436 patch. I'm using the installer from http://www.excessiveoverkill.com/ (although I've also tried copying the system files from http://mistrealm.com/UT/EO/Default.html with the same results). Now when I go to select a gametype, the dropdown contains all the usual options plus several blank spaces where the excessive gametypes should be. If I select one of the empty spaces, and then try to launch the game or edit the maplist, the game crashes. The individual mutators don't seem to do anything when run in the normal gametypes. And for some reason, the regular gametypes now make all the weapons available, but there don't seem to be any other changes.

Does anyone know what is causing this or what else I might try to get things working?

Sorry if this is a n00b question or the wrong place to ask. I googled around and didn't find anything. I've been craving some Excessive UT99 Deathmatch lately but it's been about 10 years since I've touched this game, so I'm new to getting this working on a modern computer.

Edit: Message for future people googling this:
The thing that fixed it was installing Bonus Pack 1

Make sure the .u files are in the System folder, from what I know, blank entries happen when you add a .int file that does not link to a .u file, so check you got all files needed in the proper folders.

It sounds like a broken INT file. Does your excessiveXXX.int look similar to this one?

<EDIT>Just read UTX' comment

and tried that by deleting excessiveXXX.u: Yes, there are blank entries now!</EDIT>

Thanks for replying. My .int file looks exactly like that. I tried uninstalling and wiping the UT directory, reinstalling, loaded the 436 patch, and then copied the files from the link below into the c:\UnrealTournament\System directory. Both the .int and .u files are in the System folder. I've tried versions j and h with the same results, so I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with the files as downloaded.

Do you start the game with the same user account that you have used installing the program and files? Maybe it is a permission problem. Can you open the file Excessive1_1j.u with an editor or do you get an error message then?

I think I figured it out. Excessive must use some resource in Bonus Pack 1. I noticed when UT crashed there was a reference to epiccustommodels and that file was either added or changed by the 1st bonus pack. In any case, it seems to work fine now, except that the first item under the mod menu from the home screen is blank, not sure what is supposed to be there.
