because my landlord has an electric instantaneous water heater installed in my flat for warm water.
I have to watch my electric bill. :|
That's why I changed from a tower PC to a laptop.
Blergh... That sucks :/
As for a replacement what kind of hardware do you need for what you do?
Lenovo ThinkPad W500 - Core 2 Duo @ 2,53 GHz - 4GB RAM - 500GB HDD <= this is my goal ...I used a Lenovo ThinkPad T60 till now.
I use Photo Shop CS2 and Paint tool SAI (this needs a good RAM and OpenGL)
I found a place where I can get a W500 for 259€ ...secondhand of course.

Who is the overheater now? :ironic:
(no offense, just a irony)
almost so off topic but since were talking about overheats
I guess even with the new CLEAN fans (= no need to underclock :) ) it'll (MY laptop) probably overheat when I fire up Caio Engine and make a small ragdoll
Sorry if I did offend you somehow (I didn't want to), but if it's really yourself that wanted to be offended by such stuff, then idk :noidea

Ok, forget.

I was just talking about how your laptop is now overheating where YOU were one of the guys helping me out fix MY overheat issue in the past :P

In the end, it all resumed to a clean up of a fan and now it runs at most 84 degrees, but NEVER reaches 90 degrees as it did in the past (with catastrophic results ofc), which is good :)

We have these computer recycling places, but they sell stuff as well, really cheap.

think they get rid of systems like schools or stores that dump a lot of computers on them to throw away, or recycle.

but they also get other things they keep and sell, like a room full of , hard drives, CPU, RAM, monitors, keyboards, buy at your own risk. See if you have a place like that, look under recycling.

tbh I'm also in a bit of a pickle as both my bros laptop (hard drive went bye bye after a power failure while no battery was inserted) AND my tablet (charger + battery both DEAD) have also decided to die at the worst posible time. I definetly feel ya there paper and hope that you'll find a solution to this. :(

You can't play UT or work on comics on a mobile device. :?

I found a page where they sell recycled and renewed machines with a 12 month warranty and Win7 in a bundle. But those are still expensive for me :(

Ouh... that hurts. But now I know why you are not around that much the last weeks.

EDIT----------------------------------------------
@ Dr.Flay
I checked the HDD everything works fine.
But the laptop needs 5 tries to recognise the CD drive (running a live CD again).
Maybe the ports? But I doubt all two ports (HDD+CD) going down at the same time after a simple reboot without any errors. It's either the Bios or the controller on the motherboard ...or something else?
The Bios seems to work ...but sometimes I can't select the CD drive from the temporary device selection screen on start-up.
USB ports seem to work as well (didn't try to boot from it... but will do after this post)

It's a problem which is fixable or I have to buy new hardware. :sad2: ...And I fear it's the second one.

I would clean the contacts and slots of the RAM and reseat like 2 or 3 times. Same for the hard drive cables, and all connectors, just unplug and replug a few times. Leave the CD out.

Then reset the BIOS, then reset the settings you know, and hope it works. :noidea

:loool: YES ...finally a high-end machine I can afford.

Edit------------------------------------
I booted WinXP from the HDD (which is now in an external box) over USB.
A BSOD appeared. Right after the Win logo was loaded. It behaves the same like the last time my HDD went corrupt.
Methinks the last accident wasn't purely a harddisk problem ... :|

I've some second hand and also new notebook CD-Tray and 2.5" HDD and I'm quite sure I'll never use it any more... Does your broken notebook have IDE or SATA?
And I've also a dozen desktop pc (midi/mini/maxi tower) and monitors of an age of 5 years or older in the cellar waiting for scrap collector - if you want to use such stuff. My sister will be in cologne the next two week ends so that they could carry it.

The CD drive and HDD is working it's more a hardware problem of the controller on the motherboard ...at least I think so.

Hm... I keep you offer in mind.
What are the specs of your spare machines?
Does your broken notebook have IDE or SATA?
It should be SATA.

some workaround is the following try to figure out where the battery is located (maby he is kaput).
Take the battery out of the system
Take the battery out of you system turn you system on for 30 seconds.
Turn power off replace the new or old batterie (your bios is reseted now)
Power on again your bios shoult be resetted.
All settings will be resetted as factory configuration.
If no you must find another laptop or computer for cheap prize.
Does the system boot?
Barby,s workaround is also true maby the system gets to warm because of the dust and hairs see below mine post. :tu:
If yes huray you are saved by the bell.
