Well, Minecraft is a good example of what a powerful concept alone is able to do, even if it's visually underwhelming, and it has a very strong reason why it looks the way it looks, and it's not about being retro nor anything like that, it was a consequence of being what it is: a fairly simple and straightforward procedural voxel simulator, running on top of Java (not the best choice at the time)...

In mobile gaming for instance it happens that times to times the simplest game will cause the biggest buzz in the Internet, such as Flappy Bird from a couple of years back, and it was nothing more than a game where you tapped for the bird to "jump" in the air to avoid obstacles, and it took the author just an evening to do it from what I have heard.
But 99% of the games like this in the wild, are considered from be the most absolute garbage, by developers and gamers alike.

So although I agree with you that games do not need to be AAA monsters with movie-like visuals and the like, gaming as a business has the stigma that if a game doesn't look good, no one is going to play it. And the thing is: this is demonstrably true most of the time. No matter how bland a game is, if it looks good, people will buy it. Even if half of the people ask a refund, it's still that profitable.
And the result is what you see.

In other words, gamers are actually the ones contributing for games to become less innovative, because they keep buying the same kind of games, they keep spending money through the same kind of microtransactions and so on, so there's literally no motivation for any studio to actually build a unique new game nor change business models around it, and risking their money on doing so.
It requires more passion and courage to do something unique these days, and only a few dare to do it, and from those few only some succeed, and the ones who fail loose millions, and worst case scenario (which is not that uncommon), you never hear from them again, so it's not really motivating at all.

Until someone really becomes impressed and pauses for a moment: "Hey this is actually much more fun or thoughtful than I thought it would be"
But yea, it's sad but it's also because so many people play these kind of games - hence my original argument. That this mass stuff became the trash instead and they see trash as those things that get little attention.

The way I would run my gaming company is you have to have a PC in order to see and play it. Let them suffer.

All my game boxes would read.

F X-box, F sony F NES F iphone F cell phones, we don't make games for kids and toys, PC ONLY, all games M for Mature.
...............................................Toss your toys and play like the big boys.................................................

First post... from me is talking the truth. I'm gonna post a few things from what I'm thinking...
Gaming... eh nice ground - supposed...
Some zero skill cows (yeah they fail often and even sharing that) are making movies on youtube when they are playing... "games". Amazingly kids are distracted by these movies where even my daughter has started to say (in English btw): "What the fuck, man ?" and such "poems". I'm just wondering why these MORONS are not restricting such lousy and retarded movies from being seen under 18 years old ?

PS: If you don't have kids then refrain from reply and go back to your bathroom... or any bathroom.
Have fun accordingly !

So you're telling me not to reply even though I have something to say. OK. No room for discussion. You'll find most people won't have kids that post around here or have already grown up ones in some cases.

So no I'm not refraining from reply and I just exited the bathroom.

Not sure what culture you're from, but restricting videos like that to 18 years old? That's way too harsh man.

You have no idea what kind of obscene words I've heard as a kid and used them and it was still a decade before anything like youtube would come (and even more before it would become any popular/useful and people would post gameplay vids).

I have no problem if people post videos of them playing games, fine, it might spoil something but some of it might warn you "ah this is just another trash". And honestly who cares if they have skill or not. You don't have t watch it, I don't have to watch it in fact I usually don't unless it's someone I personally know or have talked with before or generally agree with what they want to see or find them fun.

Honestly, even if you want to be prudish, the limit could be to like..15 years old or so, not 18 years old. That would have to be some hardcore porn technically.

EDIT: And if you think I had no experience with kids, well you're wrong. I had nieces/cousins that were not anywhere my age and I was already adult when they were kids. And I did have to think twice about what to not expose them to, too. I didn't have them use my PC at full scale and I watched what they did. But I did let them play Unreal/watch me play it. In fact what was most fun for them was monster infighting and summoning them at weird places or seeing them gigantic in a skybox. The kids love that kind of stuff.
EDIT2: And restricting kids too much/having too many taboos lead to insecurities and feeling like in "strayjacket". I can tell from experience. If you think I was a loose "asocial" kid back in the age that's also not true, but I did find some of kids like that charming because they were so funny and loose.
In fact I was mostly shielded too much by overprotective parents in general, well depends on what things but fact remains that I didn't have many friends and often lacked behind. But I was seek as the nerd in school or almost. I was one of the better kids in class but compared to the ones teachers liked the most I didn't suck up to the authority. I said what I thought and I still continue to this day.
That made many teachers unsure what to do with me, because on one hand I was reasonable and on the other I often countered their lessons when I knew they made an error. And that was in the eyes of the real class "geeks" unthinkable. That the teacher knows the best.
No. I did because I read biology books before they could themselves read.

Perhaps I'm wrong when I think that kids having 5-6 years old need toys not mature crap.

Fine, but...I didn't know how old they were. I didn't play violent stuff at that age except for some fighting games now and then but it wasn't exactly mortal kombat.

Well... in this technological day and age, with plenty of information freely and easily accessible, it's quite naive to think that kids won't find all sorts of things online.
By the time you teach them about where babies come from, odds are they already know for a long time.

So you can only do one of two things: give them a very limited amount of Internet access to only places you trust or no access at all, or accept the fact that they will always be one step ahead of you on what they actually know about what's out there and educate them along and try your best to prepare them for the world, teaching them what's right and what's wrong and be their best friend they can respect and fully rely on, rather than fear.
Even because, by the time they start to go to school, no matter how much you try to shield them, they will be exposed to all sorts of information even from friends and so.

My umbilical cord was actually a gamepad cord, with Quake 1 running. :P

If I had kids I think I would be too strict, and if they ever wanted a cell phone they can cut lawns and buy one themselves.

and the computer would be offline , but only for homework, friggen rug rats.

Gonna describe tiny details.
You know (or not) that small girls are looking at pink stuff, shinny, etc. While she (daughter) went busy to look at those videos for kids (wife removed browse adult mode) there were a few zero skill type videos shared by some groups of supposed gamers swearing and talking trash without to be in adult section as other videos 18+ or 15+, it's probably another fascinating anal-itics feature like some 5 years ago. In that time I was looking for "cartoons" aka in romanian (desene animate) and I could figure through results some random sequence from some TAXI movie having as intro picture some sex offered by that main character - I was almost to setup a "party" on youtube's whatever forum but I could figure that already storm was started by other people so I went quiet. I don't get this kind of sorting criteria of sharing videos especially where language used is utter shit from all angles of view. Aside some gypsies known mainly as evil in this region (and maybe not only there) were sharing some video about doing some specific stuff, for main surprise it was a video speaking clear, well, explaining everything how not even skilled people cannot describe in a better language. So we have nasty people acting way better than those who think are cool but teaching our kids to have bad habits since childhood. Some one said that teenagers are disrespectful nowadays. Well, who is guilty ? Geniuses like these with their awesome video gaming crap.
Of course later they grow and learn but I think under 14-15 years old is really too early for dealing with adult content. You'll see what I mean when you'll have your own kids... explanations are useless until you'll have the direct feeling.

No explanations are not useless. I can empathize with you.

I suppose I don't watch those videos you speak about because they are trash, too. In fact most of youtube stuff is braindamage. One has to carefuly choose.

Which brings in the burning question, now that we played 2D 3D games, I can't figure out what I want.

I think I want a DueceX version 1 type of game with more adult graphics and story line, not sex, not cussing, but something that has you on the edge of your seat and some parts gore and scary. Put in an open world that takes 2 years to complete, and ZERO online gameplay.

Then throw in more physics, secrets, secret short cuts, like tunnels, and then graphics. Some driving but not races or "missions" NO MISSIONS, no checkpoints, and no Steam crap.

Btw since romania was mentioned and gypsies etc, seen mostly as asocial and the fact that on youtube they post actually useful videos without swearing...well
you're describing a larger phenomenon. Perhaps they only use cursing, just like me, when they're really angry or in other situations than the casual stuff you see by those casual youtubers. Most of the "normal" population has way lost any sense of morals, and it did happen especially with the countries once either occupied by soviet union or answering to them. Not that the 'west' was any better, the behavior of some people in wien is generally even worse like on train stations they take up lifts and don't go via escalators when they only went shopping. It's really..i just see the emptiness and arrogance and the closer you get to 'frankenland' territories the worse that behavior becomes including a toilet lady start bullying/ridiculing you in Arnhem, but once you cross into Saxony people are less likely to pull stuff like that on you.
And all this modern technology and all made it worse.

But honestly as a kid in the 90s I was often more mature and "natural" than say my mom.
I can talk about this one instance where she exposed me to a page full of "mugshots" in some booklet/magazine, except those mugshots were of genitals. Today completely unthinkable, especially given that it was "crotchshots" of people ranging from prepubertal age, real kids, teenagers and adults alike. And she went like "this one looks like you" and "this one looks like my boyfriend" and giggled about it etc. I didn't have any of such extreme reactions and just found it odd. I don't think it damaged me any though, but I mean c'mon those people were not raised to properly deal with anything and now they're in power and have become ultra conservative instead.

EDIT: Oh yea speaking of Romania, I hope you enjoy our wood over there! They literally rob our forests here and send the wood into train carriages with destination Romania...

This is probably a "walking wood" thingy. As I know so far our wood is happily exported by some "business-man" types and then they forget to plant new trees back. Weather changed here is a result of forest thievery by these people ruining the nature - like they are living on other planet not here. Probably because we have not much wood available some people are "importing" or using whatever the same "strategy" applied. They destroyed factories one by one following some "advice" from outside and now we are consumers more than producers because of... amazing politics and I can stop here because political debates are forbidden here.
To not suspect that those trains probably are taking a small break in Romania following the same destination as Romanian wood, lol, after charging some quantity from here too... heck knows what they do. Anyway it was developed an application on mobile devices where you can query a server related to a truck with wood if you see one. If that transport is illegal based on response, you can call authorities at emergency number aka like in US is used 911. Some of them suffered penalties others I think were uncaught, and so on... Forest robbery seems to happen in multiple locations then, I did not know that you have the same problems like us.

Yes but a lot of them get sent to Romania, probably into cheap IKEA factories.
While there they also rob the forests. It's like each country/region can't use their own wood and have to pay for imported things.
