GDPR - not explained (as in not possible), but examples

Post by TheDane »

Here's a little gathering of snippets for those who are confuzed about "why the big fuzz" about GDPR.

first, the main law at the official EU site can be viewed here: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/priorit ... n-rules_en

Now, that law is extremely comlex, made on purpose to be - EU works that way so lawyers can earn £1000000000 a year haha

What goes as personal data acording to the GDPR?? Well, the lawyers, juries and judges will make the call here, but here's a link to a site trying to pull that info out from the EU law: https://dataedo.com/blog/what-is-person ... under-gdpr

Now, this is a EU law right? WRONG!! It affects practicle the entire internet (not sure about Russia and China??). To see if your server, forum or whatever is under this law, here's a link to a fine article on that subject: https://www.dpr.eu.com/do-gdpr-art-27-a ... pcQAvD_BwE

Now, according to this article forums and game servers all over the globe is under this law, as both forums and gameservers are logging the clients IP adress, if not due to add-ons, a standard gameserver will log the event of a player login with the players IP adress = GDPR in effect. Same goes for forums, admins can view members, and even guest IP adresses. Are they logged? if so = GDPR in effect. Are they only shown on screen? GDPR = in effect if screenshot is taken - how to prove??

My advice? Do never ever post or share in other ways personal data covered by the GDPR, the frames of punishment is huge  as stated in one of the articles:
Article 27 applies to your business and if you fail to appoint a Data Protection Representative you could be fined up to (the greater of) €10,000,000

GDPR is company-centric in practice, and some countries (like mine) still do not really have an entity to check if GDPR is being correctly enforced by the companies, although the vast majority are trying to be compliant of course.

Furthermore, that fine is "up to", meaning that such a value will be reserved only to the biggest companies, and only those severely infringing the law, and is just a way for the biggest players to actually pay close attention on how they handle your personal information, and do so with respect and your rights in mind.

If you are mostly compliant, and just forgot some log that is logging email addresses or something of the sort, you might not even be fined, and just told to fix it.
No one will really spend any resources whatsoever in auditing places like this forum or the UT99 game itself, not even very small companies, so no one needs to worry.

At most, should someone report something to the respective authorities, either nothing happens, or they may contact the site or server owner, but not necessarily with the intent of fining, and even then it may be unlikely.
As long as we all respect each other, and refrain to do dick moves such as posting private IP or email addresses in public, regardless if they are infringing GDPR or not, everyone's fine.
