Thanks - sadly for me that doesn't work on my iMac (no idea why) so I'll have to use a more labourious method.

I've installed all the stuff and already destroyed some bots in the mean while. Ahh, feels good!

Usually you have the rights to PM member from the start.
Maybe they deactivated their PM system right after sending you them (which can be done)...or their inbox is full which would be only possible if they would have a bazillion of PMs already.

Should be able to - maybe it's after a certain number of posts? What happens when you click on the balloon under people's avatar and details to the right of a post?

Those might not be PMs. This forum has a notification feature, pops up a number in a red circle to let you know anything that's happened that relates to you. Usually replies.
