Epic has ended Master Server Support for all Unreal Tournament Titles - How to play Online

Epic's Announcement removing support from all Unreal and Unreal Tournament Games:

  • As of December 14th 2022, All Unreal and Unreal Tournament titles have been taken down from online stores until further notice.
  • Epic's PR Team created a lot of chaos within the Unreal Communities with the above news, making it seem they are erasing The Entire Unreal Franchise from the face of the internet.
  • Master Servers are officially down, however thanks to new Community Master Servers, there are still ways to play online.
  • As of February 2023 the Unreal communities have created new master servers for each UT game.

  • There is still no news from Epic about UT3X, and judging from this screenshot from Steam, we shouldn't count on it happening.

    ~Epic really screwed the pooch with this one~

    -Since it is impossible to create a profile without access to a Master Server, you will need the Openspy patch.

    -Download Openspy patches here: https://ut3-ultimate.com/

    • -Manual Install:
      • -The easiest and cleanest way to install the patch is to use the first option, which is to download the modified UT3.EXE on its own.
      • -Open your "Unreal Tournament 3/Binaries" folder, make a backup of your default UT3.EXE ya know...in case UT3X does happen... or something...
      • -Drag and drop this modified UT3.EXE into the folder to replace it.
      • -You will then need to create a new account when you log in, which will register your login with Openspy.
      • -Voila, you are connected to the UT3 Openspy Master Server re-enabling full access to UT3.
      • (Don't forget to install MapMixer if you hate the horrendous Default UI as much as I do.)


    Fun Fact: Last year UT3 Aficionado and regular Youtube Uploader DickBird(lol) discovered that it was still possible to directly join Epic's US UT3 servers via IP address despite Epic shutting down the master servers. I'll be checking this out for myself to see if it's still the case and report back when I can. Check out his video here:

It boils down to this:
  • Unreal and UT99 will only be playable online with community master servers, meaning that either players update to the latest community patches for both games, or they will have to configure those master servers themselves;
  • Unreal II, UT2003 and UT2004 won't be playable online anymore, unless you know the servers location and open them directly (from your favorites, by IP/host, by an external website, etc), since it seems they don't have their own master servers;
  • UT3 will be in a similar state as UT2004, however Epic plans to keep supporting it in the future, so the shut down will be temporary;
  • UT4 will be completely shut down, as they strongly imply that not even offline play will be possible with that one.
So Unreal and UT99 are relatively safe, since we've been using alternate master servers for years, and they work a LOT better than Epic's master server ever did, so the community is already used to those, thus the impact will just be felt by new players or old players returning to the game.

But as for the other ones, it's pretty much the end for them, it seems.

yeah, and I'm hoping there's some new life that can be breathed into ut2k4 considering how badly it needs some community service.

the fact they're planning on bringing back ut3 is kinda weird, but I figure that's just got something to do with contracts involving xbox live services

My main language is spanish, what does this mean, the end of the ut series, ut2k4 its shutting down also?
edit: how the hell returned or new players could know where are the servers located at?

Not all of it. Post above is my setup. v469 contain not all of these master servers. At least for v469c. Maybe for v469d it expands more.
But in general v469c come with enough good setup so not need change anything.

But XBrowser not part of patch or stock game. So if you use it, you need check settings.

Also patch itself not touch your ini files. It is only replace defaults. This mean you better check it. Since your screwed settings from old version can override good defaults from patch.

About server setup - it is always custom stuff. Also it easy for check.

I have contacted Epic and GOG about the situation on behalf of 333networks, so I should have some news to share at some point.
I am also pushing for the allowance of supporting UT2004, but that is more of a technical issue.
