What is an .rar file?

Post by Ov3rload »

Hey
This is probably a really simple question - What is an .rar file and how do I use it?
Thanks

Just like zip but better, with a higher compression ratio and the ability to break the compressed files into blocks that can be downloaded individually. Google "Winrar" to find the tool.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAR ;)

Because this topic doesnt really have anything to do with UT, I move it to "Off-Topic".

This is what I was using to unzip rar files when I was running XP. A quick search through repositories and you could also find a tool for unzipping those kinds of archives on Linux as well.

Unlike Winrar, this is free to use.

Hmm^^
I admit its better to ask on this way - although this is clearly general internet knowledge for me - as that that other guy some years ago has done: I uploaded some UnrealEd packages for him and that guy - dont remember who it was but thats not the point anyway - really tried to load the *.rar packages into the Actor Class Browser. His ed crashed and he deleted the files - because he thought this was some kind of virus^^

Winrar is free to use.
After a 40 day trial it prompts you to "remove it from your computer."
But you can still use it as long as you like.

Exactly. Rarzilla is freeware, winrar just has a trial available.

Yes, but most trials/shareware become defunct/inoperable once the time limit expires. That's not the case with WinRar.
All you have to put up with is Closing the pop-up.

Hey thanks for replying everyone!
I used Winrar (because that was the only reply on here at the time), but it was a bit confusing to use so I downloaded RarZilla which I will try out next time I come across "a" .rar file.
Also, I must apologise to Shade. I had no idea what a .rar file was and I thought it was a File only used in UT.
Thanks Everyone

P.S. How do I close this thread?
