Whenever I load my Windows XP proffesional, at the empty (used to be half-full) desktop I get a message saying that lsass.exe can't find SAMSRV.dll. I click OK and nothing else showes up. Tried the safe mode - no luck.
Anyway to fix this without the windows xp cd (I kinda... Lost it :( )? I don't want to lose any UT files too.
Please somebody :help: !

Well, then ... search for this dll on your "smart"-phone...

EDIT---------------------------------------

Ways to simply resolve Samsrv.dll error message?

The two main methods in which to deal with Samsrv.dll error message:

Advanced Computer User Method (advanced):

1) Switch on your laptop or desktop and login as an admin.

2) Click on the Start button then click on Programs, Accessories, System, and after that click Restore.

3) Inside the next screen, click on “Restore my personal computer to an earlier period” and then press Next.

4) Select the latest system restore point within the “click a restore point” list, then click Next.

5) Click on ‘Next’ within the verification window.

6) Reboot the computer system as soon as the rescue is finished.

Beginner Computer User Solution (completely automated):

1) Download this (Samsrv.dll) restoration software application.

2) Install software program and click Scan button in the software.

3) Hit the Fix Errors button in the software whenever the diagnostic scan is successfully completed.

4) Restart your computer.

The advanced method won't work since the Start menu doesn't load up :(
The auto-method might work :)
Thanks, papercoffee.

Pretty sure it is a virus. According to a forum thread it COULD be the Worm WORM_SASSER.A, overall it somehow sounds somehow familiar. I think I had the same shit many years ago as well...

I am not an expert in these matters, but I think it is the best for you to format the whole stuff. Backup all stuff you want to rescue before of course.

And if possible: Please next time do think about to install an anti virus program. It is insane to move on the internet without it.

when you click ok and you get a blank screen where your desktop would normally appear does pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE bring up task manager?
if by some chance it does then your explorer shell is refusing to load.
**This below is of course assuming task manager works**
in task manager click "file" then "new task (Run)" type "explorer.exe", if it is the explorer shell then this will force it to load (desktop, start/taskbar etc.)

then i would recommend downloading combofix and run that, shut down all AV when you run it.

Using method described above, open command prompt (cmd.exe) instead of explorer.exe and enter:

Code: Select all

chkdsk c: /f
where C is your drive letter where XP is installed. This runs filesystem check, because corruption can cause errors like these.
After that run

Code: Select all

sfc /scannow
This performs system file integrity check (in case system files are damaged). Keep your XP media handy, because you're gonna need it in this process.

That's exactly the problem.

@GEx
If nothing is going to work ...you have to think about to format and reinstall everything.
You can use for this a live-CD ...Linux Mint is pretty stable ...Knopecilin (still up to date??) ...or any other Linux system.
You have to save your UT on a external HDD ...and scan it afterwards with online scanner.

Windows installations can and do just become corrupt sometimes (I've had it happen) and DLL's will lose their integrity but it's not very often and it's usually the hard drives fault rewriting someplace it shouldn't. I'm with the guys above though, you got hit with something and it's probably still there.

Even with an AV cleaning and a follow up scan with MalWareBytes I'd still strongly consider a reinstallation. It might not even be up to you anyway because I have a feeling you own a toaster until you can get hold of some media DVD's. Once core files get screwed like this your short list of 'fixes' gets really small outside of wipe-and-redo.

<Grabs soapbox, gets on it>
OK, now the lesson...Some things you do not do:
1) surf porn on your main computer. If you have to look at that stuff then use known sites and DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING except the movie you want to watch. However if you do this all bets are off because rule 1 is a the most important rule in this. Just don't do it, nothing is free and there's a reason you see previews to get you to click through.
2) Run an antivirus. Now I don't personally but I'm very careful where I go and what my habits are. I never break rule 1 and I don't break the following rules either. You should though, so get AVG or something free. They aren't all-inclusive protection but they do help when you get stupid and do something or go somewhere you ought not.
3) Don't open emails you do not know, period. Don't preview, don't look-and-decide, don't use the hotmail 'let me see see it first' feature. Tell your friends to specify in the title that it's for you so you know and anything else that seems to be from someone you don't know gets binned straight away, end of story.
4) Get and run MalWareBytes. It is free and damned useful. Scan every couple of days and when you find something track it back to where you got it from. NEVER go there again.

Good habits give good results. If you drive your car through the bad side of town you up your risk of problems and the same is true here. Keep your car in the good side of town and lessen the chance of trouble greatly.

I'm afraid not :(
AAAARGHH! I can't believe it! There're so many fixes yet none have worked so far.

you have no choice now, you need to get hold of an XP O.S disc, this is O.S failure.

you can download a full copy of XP online but make sure its a stock version then use your own XP key (regardless of what people think, the software is stock/standard, its the key that will flag as a cracked copy of XP)

there are other things you can try but all need an O.S disc to get there and simplest way is to do a repair install.

make sure its the same version as installed on your pc as in XP pro SP2 or XP home and do a repair install, this way you wont lose anything.

Allright, I'll try to re-install xp. I still have a few questions though:
How many xp pro versions are there (just currious)?
My UT files are in D:. If I accidently install a different version, would it be deleted too?
(dumb question) Where can I find out my xp cd-key?
