Did you ever noticed UT99 drew inspiration from Matrix?
So, I was wondering if you ever noticed UT99 style drew inspiration from Matrix(the movie) style, since I looked up on Google but it looks like no one ever talked about it...
For example, the dark urban intro and some maps.
Some tributes and inspirated stuff can be:
- DM-Morpheus wich is a clear tribute to Morpheus from Matrix.
- XAN who is an AI that is very strong against humans and thinks of them as obsolete(even if he's playing a human game lol...);
- The Matrix skin for the cyborg model;
- The translocator lets you teleport just like phones in Matrix.
- The door decoration which could be this door right here(Wireframe here);
- The cryopod, which could be these cryopods here;
- The IntroShip decoration could have drew inspiration from the Matrix spaceships;
- To enable cheats you had to send the command "iamtheone", similar to the "chosen one", Neo, from Matrix;
- The robot clearly looks like these ones.
Some of the original soundtracks drew a lot of inspiration from Matrix, for example this one:
3otKIBNqciw
which drew inspiration from this one:
iCBL33NKvPA
Do the comparsion from 0:13 on UT ost and 0:15 on Matrix ost.

Matrix
Release date: March 31, 1999
UT
Releasedate: November 30, 1999
They are pretty close ...but I don't think so.
UT was longer in development than 8 month.
Btw. The Robot in Matrix is from The Matrix Reloaded.
Release date May 7, 2003
Matrix is a mathematical term.
Morpheus is the God of dreams.
The Beam from Star Trek Enterprise is much older than the Transloc.
Regarding AI against humans ...did you ever read Asimov?
Edit-------------
Oh and Propellerheads are very well known for their Break-Beat influence.

From Wikipedia.With a budget of $2 million and 350,000 lines of C++ and UnrealScript, Unreal Tournament took almost a year and a half to develop.

Re: Did you ever noticed UT99 drew inspiration from Matrix?
I think this is one of those classic cases where there are one or two references to "something", and then all of the sudden people's brains pick up all the things and force associations between them to establish that the object in cause was heavily influenced by that "something".
Like it was pointed up above, the game was probably already getting somewhat polished and added content to when the movie came out.
Having that said however, it's clear that it certainly has some references to that movie, specially considering that during development there are plenty of features, easter eggs and content added up to a few weeks before the release, sometimes just days, "iamtheone" being perhaps the most obvious one in this case, and the rest not so much.

Humans look for patterns in everything...it's the way our brains work and it as often betrays us as it does assist. The correlation between the Matrix film and the game is interesting, but probably not quite as powerful as believed.
Although 8 months isn't enough time to build the game around the movie in any significant way, I don't doubt that it had an effect. A lot can happen in 8 months of game development and to think that some maps, music and even player avatars might be influenced isn't a stretch.

The robot, cryopod and introship meshes are from Unreal, released in 1998, so there's probably 0 link between them and the matrix movie.
All the other elements are seemingly ultra-common science-fiction themes which had been ubiquitous for decades before Matrix was released.
Apart from the Morpheus name.

Rofl, Deus Ex had more in common with The Matrix than UT did. There is literally a Matrix text rain texture in the game as an easter egg. You should play that game if you haven't, buggy as hell and frankly aged like milk in a closet, but it is a fun romp for the first 4-5 hours.

I think Matrix got inspiration from UT - as a personal opinion. Anyway they are similar at some point: Both of them are original from planet Earth - if I'm not mistaking...

In my serverbrowser there exists a server with matrix moves and other matrix elements ("Stig's Matrix Redirected"). It makes fun to play there.
