CMC 17 - [FULL MAP REVIEWS] 58 WHOPPING PAGES IN A PDF.

Post by Terraniux »

It is done. MY FINGERS HURT. MY WRIST HURT. MY HEAD HURTS. :ironic:

But is is done. :highfive:
2 pages are blank but are 'security locks' to make sure it stayed in the format, in case I screwed my font or format.

I was truly honest as mapper, reviewer, and critic.
Your opinion may be different and you may understand things wrong, but I truly was fair and honest with each and everyone of them.

You did a great job writing reviews for all the maps!

As for my own map, I had planned to address all the points you brought up but I ran out of time. I had to cheap out on the lighting quite badly (it's almost completely copy-pasted)
The sticker, did you test RC1 or RC3? I know RC1 has the issue but it should be fixed on RC3 and on my system it looks right.

Believe it or not, I was already planning to add domination support to the map.
I think that when I have finished my map you will like it quite a bit more.

Holy shit! <imagine this said by the UT2k4 announcer>

You did a terrific job with that document and reviews. Although it's 58 pages long, you made it quite easy to read, given the way you've written it, the font used and the usage of lots of pictures.
I believe there are only a few in the the entire community who would go to this length like you did.

As for the review on my map, actually the negative bits were on point. You're not the first one saying the coronas are a bit much, which I agree with, so last Wednesday I already added to my todo list to tone them down (I will probably just lower the glow to at least half and their sizes by a third, which should do the trick without having them almost disappear).

Some of the additions of the CTF logos on walls and the floor were exactly to guide the player to know where to go.
CTF maps are either asymmetrical (rarely) or generally rely on having the base color used throughout each half of the map, but I didn't want to do either. I actually believe the map is small enough for players to not get lost, specially once I add bot support and it becomes more apparent from where each team is coming from.
Also, as it's meant to be a very symmetrical arena, the end result is indeed some repetition within the same area around the 4 corners.

Other than that, I have been sorting out the BSP and lighting issues, and on this regard it's almost done, and the map will look a bit better with things fixed. :)

Thanks for your detailed review. :tu:

Thanks all, glad you like it.

Yes, but I had to. Otherwise it would not be a fair / balanced commentary.
But I also stated that if you managed to get your map 100% done before the deadline, the entire community bows down to you as the king of the competition. Image
Well, lets honest here, we ARE already bowing down to your map.

My pleasure writing it! :agree1:

Nicely done!

Two things tho, My name is "ExpEM" not "Expem" and I recommended 3v3v3 not 3v3.
But all ups to you (and not just coz you gave me a 9 :lol2: ). I have a thread up for post competition fixes, feel free to add to it!

Thank you so much for spending your time doing this, i really apreciate ya :highfive:
This is exactly what I wanted from participating in this contest: feedback. I never expected to go further than last place, so this was a major victory for me. Especially when i jumped from doing cubes to this in relative notime  , so I really feel like a winner knowing that it surpassed my expectations :D
The thing is I don´t think I´m ready for Multiplayer just yet, and the things that outstanded here were definitely SP elements: Meeting the Theme, creating an story and it´s atmosphere and finding the elements to ciment all. The main room was really my focous of work, the rest felt secondary because it really was to be honest
As for the Textures, they are infact a Quake 1 Texture as it was my original idea to mimic a dark Quake map (the very theme of that game is Lovecraftian chaos...). The skybox turned out to be an incomplete skybox but I liked the atmosphere so much that I thought maybe I should keep it and just do a better research next time
Map has much potential, but is not showing it at the moment for me. (...) A bit more lighting and variation of architecture and elemental stuff will boost the
map so high, it even reaches into The Void.
I´m a big fan of Progress>Perfection so I´ll just do minor tweaks but this project is over for me.However dully noted on all the ideas you gave me :highfive: (the lights, traps, variations, ect...).Next year if we have another constest I bet your ass you will see a much much better map than this ones :lol2:

@ XantonII
Nice to hear, glad I could help.
You mind if I show you an example of different lighting in your map,?

I will not touch the rest, promised.
