Lag/stutter with dedicated UbuntuServer 16.04 and Athlon64

Post by Party Boy »

Hello, I'm new around here...

I can't describe it better, I put together a server and it likes to do this:

I'm connected inside the LAN but I have people connected from Internet that reports the same problem...

The specs are:
  • Ubuntu Server 16.04
  • Unreal Tournament 451
  • AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1.8 GHz 939
  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
  • Kingston 4x512 MB 400 MHz Dual Channel
  • Samsung Spinpoint F3 2x512 GB SATA II? RAID0
  • MSI GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB PCI-E
I suppose someone has already had this happen ? . . .

I want to clarify that I have two UT2004 servers running in the same machine with no problems...

It does the same with NewNet 0.9.2 and it's not my processor speed, I don't have that problem...

Did you copy in an installation from someone or did you create a new server instance? Are your error logs clean and the mods are all loading correctly and the player joins all look good? If you aren't sure PM/email me your server log and let me take a look at it. You might add the UT.ini too. Fresh eyes very often see a problem you might be missing.

If you copied it: Make a backup copy of the unrealtournament.ini then delete it from your server. Restart the server and it will generate you a new one. Now check the server via your LAN and see if the stutter is gone. If it is then add your information back into the new ini file (don't use your old one).

If it's a fresh install then there's a conflict somewhere, usually something stupid simple like duplicating ports. I know almost all the dumb mistakes because I've made them.

Thanks for the reply, seems that I dun goofed the .ini...

I installed NewNet 0.9.2 and copied the CustomGameConfig from the MapVoteLA.ini example, it said 0.9 instead of 0.9.2...

:-?

I'd try it with a vanilla installation of UT. If there are also problems I'd check network stability and speed (for example with NetIO) and CPU speed and temperature. Does that CPU already have multiple cores? AFAIR not, but if so UT should be nailed on one only.

Your log looks OK so there's that.

Yeah, that looks like performance spiking with your server's CPU. Is your antivirus scanning the incoming packets maybe? Also doesn't ACE get a little weird in a Linux environment if you don't configure a couple of things? Barbie's suggestions are spot on though, I'd start there.
