The hunt for player lodmeshes in .u files

Post by fudgonaut »

I have a newer version of Photoshop now, I'm going to test if my 3D painting tutorial still holds up.

I've used the UT Package Tool (UTPT) to scour botpack.u and epiccustommodels.u, and extracted each lodmesh to .3ds format for the following player models:

Boss
Commando
FCommando
SGirl
Soldier
TCowMesh
TNaliMesh
TSkM (Skaarj)

What I'd like to do is put together a little zip file for each model that includes the .3ds file, the wireframe textures (maybe in a couple different formats), and a .psd file with everything set up and ready to go.

This way, if there are other users who have a 3D-capable version of photoshop, they could just download them and start skinning without having to go through the rigmarole of prepping files for 3D painting. This might be useful for folks who are interested in a skinning contest.

But I can't remember where/how to find the lodmeshes for Xan Mk II and the Warboss player models. Can anyone pont me in the right direction?

EDIT 1: I found Xan MkII and Warboss in SkeletalChars.u

EDIT 2: While some of the UI elements have moved around since Photoshop 5/6, I have tested and the 3D-painting tutorial remains accurate for later versions.

I use your tutorial for my Fighting Nalis (still WIP) ...I had to recreate the first skin because the former version was lost.

I wasn't sure anybody ever tried 3D painting using my tutorial -- I am pleased to hear you got some mileage out of it!

Are you creating a bunch of themed Nali skins?

I try to create a team of 5 Nalis which were supposed to use the Nali Weapons III .............but I had never finished them. Now I'm back and started again with the undead Nali running around in his own body-bag.
And I must say the distortions around the neck of this model are awful ...The chin and throat make no sense regarding the texturing.

Yeah I think most of the player models have spots where the pixels are just horribly stretched - some worse than others...

Looks like the male model is used for the female skin.

I've created a .zip file for the following player models:

Boss
Commando
FCommando
NewXan (Xan MkII)
SGirl
Soldier
TCowMesh
TNaliMesh
TSkM (Skaarj)
WarMachineBoss

Each subfolder contains the following

A .psd file of a player model which is (in theory) ready for 3D painting
A .3DS file of the character mesh
A set of wireframe .png images. Some are at 1024x1024, most at 512x512 - resize them to meet your needs. These do not need to be loaded into Photoshop, they are merely for reference or if you want to work outside of Photoshop.

Please note, while you are painting, both the .psd and supporting .psb files are set at 300 PPI.

Before you export .psb files into individual textures per my tutorial, you'll need to resize their PPI to 72, and eventually resize the texture dimesnions (presumably to 256x256) for final packaging.

Apologies for this extra step. Photoshop throws an error if you try painting if the image mode & pixels per inch of the .psd doesn't match the image mode & pixels per inch of the .psb files. But I couldn't find any documentation on how to make the .psb files to default to 72 PPI. If anyone knows how to solve this, let me know.

If anybody cares to take these files for a spin, please provide any feedback if I need to fix any egregious erros. Thanks!
