Error when connecting to NewNet servers

Post by Tony G »

Hi there,

I am getting the error "Can't find Function in file 'Function UnrealShare.SpriteSmokePuff.PostBeginPlay' when attempting to connect to NewNet servers.

No problems playing on other servers. I am running UT patch 469.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thank you in advance :D :tu:

Hmmm...you mean all NewNet servers give you this error? I am on 469 and I have never seen this, but...I have been taking a break from online servers these days. Maybe tonight I will connect to some, to see what is the deal.

Yes all NewNet servers give me this error. I think there is 6 or 7 of them. No problems connecting/playing on other servers.

I don't know why you get that when connecting to NewNet servers but I do know that the UT99 version of UnrealShare doesn't have that function - it is only in the Unreal version of UnrealShare (UT99 has UnrealShare.SpriteSmokePuff.BeginPlay) - the error is one I have seen before when attempting to use Unreal-only assests in UT99.

I think i saw a list once of 10+ different UnrealShare.u's with all different hashes and sizes..

Your best option is to get the game from gog.com
Or ask a mate for a unrealshare.u that is working..

But...the 469 includes a UnrealShare.u file. So it should work, I think.

Yes, the UnrealShare from 469b is fine - as regards the SpriteSmokePuff, it's the same as the one from 436 in that neither have the PostBeginPlay function.

The quickest and easiest way to investigate this is for the OP to indicate which specific servers they get this message from on attempting to connect so someone else can try and see what happens?

I see the UnrealShare.u file in my UnrealTournament/System folder. Not sure if I need to change it to a different version?

The server addresses are below, it happens on all of them.

178.254.37.222:1111
178.254.37.222:4444
178.254.37.222:5555
178.254.37.222:6666
178.254.37.222:7777

aah you were on 469 already.
Hmm indeed filthy servers, just talked about them yesterday on ut99org discord.
I am able to join them with a 469test setup though.

I connected to 178.254.37.222:6666 without any problems - so there is not an issue with 469b per se nor with 469's UnrealShare.

No, you don't need to change your UnrealShare (provided that it is the one that came with 469b).

A possible explanation is that, for some reason, you have an Unreal version of a resource/file that those servers require - since you only get this issue with those servers, it is probably not worth the effort to try figure out what the precise problem is?

One of the advantages in using XBrowser is that it will indicate which/when servers have fake players - as noted by others, none of the servers you listed had any real human players.
